Hi,
I want to fade an image from say 100% opacity at the bottom to around 50% at
the top. How can I do this? I’m using PS6.

TIA

Paul

Duplicate your background layer then turn off the visibility of the background layer

Create a black gradient which is 0% visible (i.e. 100% transparent) at one end and 50% visible (50% transparent ) at the other.
You can do this by altering an existing gradient.

Enter quick mask mode and drag your gradient from bottom to top of the image.
Exit quick mask maode and choose Edit>Clear

Use a layer mask. Select the layer you want to "fade" and then click on the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. This will add a layer mask to the same layer. In the Layers Palette, the thumbnail on the left is the actual layer you want to apply the mask to and the one on right is the actual layer mask. Click on this icon (the right one) and then select the Gradient Tool. Double click on the gradient icon in the upper left of the tool bar. Set one bottom "buckets" to black an the other to white. Then set the Opacity settings of the top buckets to 100% for the Black and 50% for the white. Then drag your gradient tool vertically, holding the shift key to keep it straight. Depending on which end of the gradient is black, you may have to drag either from the bottom up or the top down.
