I’ve been a Photoshop Elements 2.0 user for about 2 years now and I’m currently in the middle of the CS tryout version.

The added features in CS will make it extremely difficult to go back to Elements. I think I’m ready to make the jump.

Here is where I need a little help and input on the subject.

My budget won’t allow the $600+ to purchase the full retail version. But I can swing an older version and the CS upgrade.

I’ve been looking on ebay and it looks like you can purchase 3.0 or 4.0 for less then $100. But what do you look for to make sure your not getting ripped off. I want to make sure I do this right and legal.

Do you have to have an unregistered version?
What if the seller can’t or won’t transfer ownership?
Can the academic version be upgraded to a regular version? Some descriptions are easy to see right through as far as authenticity, but some are harder to tell, what questions should be asked to make sure your not getting a bogus copy?

I know this is a long winded question, so thank you in advance for any input you can give me.

search the forum for ebay and you’ll get a lot of hits. be careful. do you have a student or teacher in the home? if so you can qualify for the edu version.

Hi Tim.
This is how I managed to afford PS CS.
First of all, the version of PS that you are upgrading from has to be registered with Adobe. It also has to be on their records as not having been used to upgrade from. All you have to do is phone Adobe on their UK sales line (listed on their web site) and give them the serial number of the old software.
If you are upgrading from a Windows version to a windows CS, or Mac to Mac, you just get an upgrade version of CS.
If you are changing platforms, (I changed from PS 3 for Mac to CS for Windows,) you get a full stand alone version for the same money. If the prospective seller won’t play ball, don’t buy!

The guy I bought from actually deals in old software and actually traded in some software that I had but didn’t want, which made it cheaper for me and meant I didn’t have to mess around selling on ebay.
I don’t know, but I guess he’s still in business, it can’t help to try him. his email address is and his name is Tony Stradwick.

Hi Tim,
That’s the way I went. If you finally buy on e-bay, check the sellers record very carefully through the buyer’s ratings. If an outfit called Inatech is selling, they can be trusted to supply legal programs, but private sellers must be suspect.

Do you have to have an unregistered version?

You will be safest. If you get a registered copy, you will need a transfer of ownership.

What if the seller can’t or won’t transfer ownership?

Then consider it an illegal copy

Can the academic version be upgraded to a regular version?

Yes

Remember that if the user has upgraded to a new version, the old version cannot be sold legally.

Can the academic version be upgraded to a regular version?

Yes, but it can’t be purchased by someone ineligble for academic pricing.

Take a look at http://www.adobe.com/store/products/special.jhtml? id=catMicrotek&sourcecode=112300

You can get Photoshop CS for $299 if you have a license for Elements. Act fast, I think that the special pricing ends 6/30/2004.
