I have been using Photoshop for many years and have had it on my computer using Home Ed. XP for year or more

All of a sudden it has just disappeared. I try to install it and it loads up, then just goes back to my desktop.

I had Ver. 4, so install that first and Ver.4 works. But then I use my Ver. 7 upgrade and it don’t work. I’ve tried all ways to install and can’t figure out what is wrong. I haven’t loaded anything else, so don’t know what I can do.

I don’t really want to upgrade to CS because I don’t use it on the net, just for my own enjoyment.

Can some one give me any ideas or where I can go for help?

Sure will appreciate any help

TIA

OK, it appears that you are on PC (WinXP-Home). When you say that it "disappeared," what do you mean? Did the shortcut on your desktop go away, or did the program get removed from the HDD? XP has a habit of asking, "There are unused icons on your desktop. Do you want to remove them?" It is sometimes presistant about wanting to remove them. If you, or anyone, ever let this happen, the shortcut might well have removed, but the program will still be there. Depending on where you installed it, you might want to take a long, hard look with My Computer, or more easily with Windows Explorer (though that program is hidden in default installation). Look in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop (and maybe variations of that) for PS. It should still be there, unless some helpful family member chose to Uninstall it via Control Panel. If you find the folder, and it has PS v 7, then just drag the photoshop.exe file to the desktop, while pressing Alt (I think – maybe Ctrl, but whichever it is, you will see the icon with an arrow on the lower left. That is what you want – a shortcut, not a copy, or move of the program to the desktop.) That will re-establish your shortcut.

Now, if there is no Photoshop 7 anywhere on your C:\, someone has cleaned up your HDD and uninstalled it. Why it will not install from CD would be a mystery either way.

Good luck,
Hunt

Thanks for answer, but…..

The shortcut was still on desktop, program still in C\Program files\Adobe\Photoshop. And the program that runs with Photoshop, Image Ready, does run. But Photoshop shows it loading all sorts of it’s files, then just blanks out to desktop.

And I just checked ALL the files in my computer with same Ver. in a friends computer , thinking maybe I was missing a dll or something, but our directories show exactly the same files.

So, I guess I will have to go to Adobe for help…I tried installing in Safe Mode as their Help Forum suggests, no help there, or take to shop and have it reformatted, as I think it must be a problem with my computer. Maybe got a virus that got thru, altho I do use virue checkers.

Thanks again for trying to help,

Dolores

Hi Dolores,

On the splash screen it shows what PS is doing as it loads. What does the splash screen say just before PS disappears?

Try right clicking on Photoshop on the task bar, and select ‘Maximize’. I’ve had a similar problem with other apps, and for some reason they always open ‘Minimized’.

OK, first, I’d take Hecate’s advice to watch the splash screen very carefully. There will be one line of black text, that will change to show what is happening. Depending on your machine, this might be very quick. Just before it goes away, what is the last thing it was loading – fonts, maybe? This should give you a clue as to what is causing the problem. Corrupted fonts can cause PS to just shut down, and all it takes is one. Same goes for a plug-in.

Next, to follow up on Photoman’s comment. When PS "goes away," is there an icon for it in your task bar? If so, just click on that, and see if it opens. I too have had programs that would load, then disappear, sort of. They minimize and drop to the task bar. It doesn’t happen often, or even with the same program, but it does happen. Right-click the icon, then look at Properties. Check out how PS is set to run, full-window, minimize?

Let us know what PS is doing before the "crash," as per Hecate’s response, and that may help someone diagnose the problem better. Though bundled together, PS and ImageReady are two different programs. I do not know the sensetivities of PS v IR, but I’ll bet there are tons.

Good luck,

Or could you somehow have gotten the file name stuck in an adware remover program or anti pop up
that is killing it?

As you have Windows XP have you tried the Control Panel – Add Remove Programme option??
It may give you the option of repairing your copy of PS via the original installation disk! worth a look anyway!

Just noticed a similar thread on the Adobe forums – Photoshop 7 crashing on loading – where it is suggested that you delete Adobefnt*.LST
I tried a search on that exact phrase and found about 9 such files relating to Adobe – some to Acrobat.
Maybe you could give that a try (you could just rename them if you don’t want to delete them – change to Adobefnt*.LSX for instance)

Hm-m-m, might be something to that. StopZilla ate my Google URL (home page on IE), and it took quite awhile to figure out what was going on. I could access IE from, say Dreamweaver, but could not via any other method (that called up my "Home Page"). Have you run a spyware/malware program recently? Does it have a "report" page, to show what it did? If you have Norton Systemworks, you might try their WinDoctor, to see if it shows any "bad shortcuts," registry items that are screwed up, or similar. Warning! I would not "fix" anything with Norton just yet, until you have taken a bunch of notes and checked more closely into the problem – just use it (or similar) to look.

yes it is possible for the anti-spyware to change the registry. It looks at anything added to it recently. You have to very carefully look at what it wants to change, some of the things on the list are stuff you do want installed. It also has a backup file, so you could try that.

A lot of people have had issues with files left in folders after uninstalling, the font issue being one, the other common problem seems to be the preferences file.

After the uninstall maybe rename your old Adobe folder to (OLD_Adobe) then reinstall to new completely empty directories. By renaming the stuff it’s still all there in case you want to put back your actions and textures etc. later after you see if the new install works.

Also try installing with virus software disabled, some programs see this as spyware or scripts.
Version 7 requires the patch to 7.01 as well.

Antoher good thought. While I have not had a problem with NAV and installations over the last few years, it was reputed to cause havoc with many installition programs. So far, none of my spyware programs have hindered an installation, but there is always a first time.
