I have PS CS setup on my laptop and frequently use multiple external drives attached to it. Suddenly PS’s preferences would not work and PS would automatically delete them.

My settings had an external drive as my primary scratch (which PS ignores when it is not attached). While my computer THOUGHT it could see it, the drive (for whatever reason) was no longer accessable. PS would know it is there, try to access it but fail. Then PS would delete the preferences file. Restarting the drive solved it.

So, the hint is: If PS is deleting the prefences file upon startup, check your scratch disks. Make sure they are truely accessable by the machine. Actually open a file on the drive. Don’t just browser it — the cache is enough to do this.

Hope this helps others.

This is one of the reasons an external drive is not recommended for memory scratch.
