I am trying to get safe copies of my Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator files by burning them on DVD’s. The burning process goes ok, but the verification failes. And when I try to open the files I have burned it just states that it can’t open the files because of a disc error. I have also tried to copy files back to my hard drive from these DVD’s but that doesn’t work either (Data error (CRC)). I just experimented by burning same files on CD and that worked out fine. I could burn them all on CD’s but DVD’s would be better because I have A LOT of files to burn. And there must be a reason why these DVD’s don’t work.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

All advice would be helpful. I am so scared that something happens to my hard drive before I get safe copies of everything.

Bad dvd disk, bad dvd writer, bad dvd software… The list is endless. By the way, the first DVD writer in my new computer failed after a couple of months. It would still read and write CD-Rs though

The hard drive is much more reliable than either CDs or DVDs. What you protect yourself from is inadvertent deletion (by you). Also, there comes a time when you don’t have enough space to keep
everything.

Still searching for a better solution to archival backup…

Sounds like a problem with your DVD drive or burning software.

DVD discs come as DVD(RW)+ and DVD(RW)-……..4 different types. Check what your drive will burn to and check that your discs are compatable.

Rene,

I use a Sony DVD +R/-R/+RW/-RW drive and Roxio Easy CD DVD Creator 6. I have created numerous DVDs without a single "coaster".

I paid about $300 USD for the drive, but have seen the new and improved version for $149 USD. The software cost me $40 or so USD after rebates.

As Mr. Walkley stated, the proper media needs to be used for your DVD burner. I have known several people to try to burn on media not compatible with their burner. They, however, got an error message stating they needed to insert the correct media when the tried to set the burn up.

Hope this helps,

Another question comes up. Are you having failures with the same media that previously created disks that worked without any problems?

If it is a different brand/model disk possibly there is a drive firmware update that will let the drive use the disks. I gave away a 25 pack of brand name disks for just that reason and NO firmware upgrade was available.

If it is the same brand/model disk that has worked, the first thing I would do is make sure that the data cable is properly connected. They sometimes "creep" and I have had to unplug then replug the cable connector to cure the problem. If the drive is the only device on that cable, do the same with the connector to the mother board.

Is something running in the background? That can cause problems especially if the "something" uses a hard drive.

Good luck,
Bill, who has even had IDE cables go bad (NOT fun to troubleshoot!)
