I have a picture of a friend of mine. Part of his face is in sunlight the rest is in shadows. I would like it all to be illuminated correctly. I am trying to use levels. Is there any way to copy the levels in one area and use it in another area. Tom

Difficult to do manualy and still look convincing, CS has IMAGE> ADJUSTMENTS>SHADOW/HIGHLIGHT which works very well. There are also various plugins if your using version 7 or less,

You can try selecting the darker area using something like the magic wand tool. Then while it is selected create a new curves adjustment layer. Try raising the curve by moving a point about 1/3 way from the bottom. You may have to do this for one or more of the color channels as well.
You should be able to lighten the area a certain amount without it looking to artificial.
I have a tip on my web site about removing the blue from shadows which illustrates the technique.
Just follow the tips link on the home page.

Try this
select and feather the shadow
Ctrl J it to its own layer
Blend mode to ‘screen’
Adjust opacity as required
