I need to rename 1100 images so that they will be sequeintially re-numbered in the order they were taken, not in numerical order. I am shooting with two 10ds, and some of the numbers are the same from the two cameras, so I know that the pc will kick those out with a replace dialogue box. Any suggestions?

I think you would need a script to read the EXIF date taken (if this is different from the file date in Windows which would be slightly easier), sort all the files by this date and rename them accordingly. Not trivial I would guess.

OR… Just do two batch renames. Rename all the ones from one of the 10ds with a sequence… then combine the two sets and do a rename…

Actually, that might mess up the date modified on the file though… hmmm… It’s worth a shot, I guess.

hi Mick,
thanks for your reply.
the problem that i have is that the ultility i have does not have the option of renaming them as i have them arranged. for instance i could be placing "copy of img_1100" next to "img_1100" in my folder, but when i go to rename it places all of the "copies" in the front, and follows with the originals afterwards, thus messing up the order. thanks in advance.

I’m not too sure what to suggest but have you tried the Win XP (if you have it) rename facility which allows you to order by date (or even by Date Picture Taken) and rename sequentially. I don’t use the Photoshop batch renaming facility so can’t make any sensible suggestions there I’m afraid but maybe somebody else will have a suggestion.

Exifer will do it based on the EXIF date and time data in each file. wrote in message

Jeff,

If you aren’t using WinXP, ThumbsPlus (www.cerious.com, with demo available) will allow you to sort per a specified option. Then you can use the AutoRename function to sequentially name the files per a specified scheme. I’ve not used the WinXP capability for this and it may be similar, but I’m guessing ThumbsPlus has more expanded features. Of course ThumbsPlus does more than just that…it’s a great program for image management and performing certain batch operations with.

Regards,

Daryl

Thanks Daryl.
I used a utility titled STAMP which uses the meta data embedded in the code of the image to rename. Thanks again.
