i’m trying to do a quick mask and then use the gradient tool to fade an image out. i do this all the time and for some reason this time it won’t work. when i enter the quick mask the foreground color changes to white, i think it usually turns black? and then when i do the gradient nothing happens. anyone know why it wouldn’t work? i tried duplicating the layer into a new file and it still wouldn’t work. what am i missing?

thanks!!

Erica,

When you switch to QM edit mode, the foreground color becomes black by default if you haven’t used QM previously in the current PS session. PS remembers the last tone you used when painting in QM in the current session, and the foreground becomes that tone. It will be black, white, or gray. If the foreground tone is not what you want, just change it.

Erica,

My response was based on my memory (which ain’t what it used to be!). Checking after the fact, it seems thar PS remembers the last tone used in QM PERIOD, whether in the current session or a previous session. It’s memory persists through a shutdown and reboot.
