I reviewed the recent postings but I think my requirements are a little different.

I’m ready to step up, mainly to gain a little space on my desk, and not have a 40 pound crt staring me in the face.

I’m looking for a 19" or better LCD monitor at a reasonable price. Color fidelity is not an issue since I never do work for print. I only do work for web sites I produce.

What does matter to me is the monitor has to be "watchable" in an non-technical sense, since I will be looking at it 8+ hours a day. The ones I see at Fry’s, at least the affordable ones, seem to have dot-pitch that makes them look like early 70’s color tv’s. Luminance is important, I hate a dull looking screen. Contrast, I believe black should truly be black, etc. "Features" are not a factor. Just display the damn screen.

Hate to drag this group down with such an armature question, but maybe someone here will understand my needs.

Something around $500 US would fit my budget. I don’t follow this kind of thing closely and appreciate any advice. If 19" is impossible for what I want at that price 17" might work.

TIA. Alan

Hi Alan,

I just went through this process myself – though I do do some printing but strictly non-professional. I settled on the Viewsonic VP191. It arrived last week and I am very happy with it so far. Very bright, responsive, good colour reproduction, high contrast etc. No dead pixels.

I settled on it as I read a couple of rave reviews of the VP171, then decided to ‘upsize’ 🙂

You don’t tend to see the Viewsonic’s on display in the stores as they are directed more to a professional/corporate market (at least here in Australia)

I’ll second Caitlin’s recommendation. I needed a monitor for a seldom used PC which runs a few ancillary applications. Space was limited and I didn’t want to spend a lot, so I compromised on a Viewsonic 17" LCD. I was surprised by the quality of the picture. It’s bright and sharp. Very nice – the fidelity is a lot better than I expected. My workstation uses two MultiSync 20" LCD’s which are reasonably well calibrated; next replacement, I think I’ll look carefully at Viewsonic.

I am not a graphic artist, however. Just a programmer who needs to do a bit of web work.

Thanks to both of you for your reply. I know Viewsonic has a good reputation, I’ll look into that. Thanks again
Alan

Be aware that most 17" and 19" monitors share the same 1280×1024 resolution so the image on the 19" isn’t any finer, just bigger.

I am using the Samsung 17" LCDs, the models with a DVI input, which makes the images very sharp.

That siad, if you are near a Costco, thay have a 19" Princeton Graphics LCD with DVI and analog inputs for under $400. I have one PG LCD 17" and it’s very good, but not quite up to the Samsung.

What you want is the one with the highest contrast ratio for the price. I would suggest you look at the following makes: Iiyama, Viewscan, LG.

*snip*

Which is one of the reasons I went for the 19" :-). 1280×1024 is just too tiny as far as I’m concerned – making applications, text webpages etc hard to read. As it is, I’ve set the 19" to ‘larger text’.
