Help -Bug? Removing USB Lexar Jump Drive PS CS

I have found that after editing a pix in PS CS and saving to my LEXAR Jump Drive, I can not "Safely Remove Hardware", unless I shutdown PS, which is an annoyance. I get a message that (The device ‘Generic volume’ can’t be removed right now. Try stopping the device again later) Anyone know how to ‘unallocate’ the jumpdrive so it can be removed without shutting down PS?

Did you actually save to that drive?

NEVER save to any drive except your local harddrive.

Yes I saved to the jumpdrive. Did not realize there was a restriction. I guess I will save to HD and move or copy to jumpdrive. Thanks

It’s not a restriction.

Your jumpdrive is a CF memory card with a special chip that was created to be written to repeatedly by the sensor in your camera. It is not a portable storage device or disk.

The jumpdrive is not a memory card for a camera, but is infact, a USB file storage/transfer solution. We use flash drives (Lexar and SanDisk) and love them.
Bob answered your question, but something critical we have learned through their use is that there is no extra window asking about file deletion. Nor does the deleted file go to the recycle bin/trash and we learned it the hard way. On our Windows 98/2000/XP and Mac OS X machines, when we delete something off a flash drive, it is GONE!

Depends on your recycle bin settings. While it is correct that anything deleted from a removable or network drive does not go to the recycle bin, I do get the delete confirmation dialog on my XP machine if the "display delete confirmation dialog" box is checked under Recycle Bin properties. If I’m deleting from a local HD it asks if I want to ship the file to the recycle bin, and if I’m deleting from a removable (or network) drive it asks if I want to delete. So, the dialog box does indicate what’s going to happen.

Well, that is a great little tidbit of info! Sure enough, solves the prob on XP. Now, must check the other machines for hidden check boxes. Thanks!

I wouldn’t SAVE to a jumpdrive, but it would be an easy means to COPY TO and carry files to a different non-networked or off site computer.

Disregard Terrat – your jump drive is indeed a portable drive. Since I don’t own own one, I may be speaking into my hat. But that’s never stopped us lurkers from offering a suggestion. :-).

I have PS7, so maybe PSCS has new restrictions; but see if you can edit the drive’s parameters to allow you to unplug the drive without having to warn the OS.
Right-click on the drive, click on the Hardware tab. Even though you right-clicked on the jumpdrive, it’s not the default on the Hardware tab. You should see all of your drives listed, hard drives, floppies, CDs, removables (card readers, camera CF card). Select the appropriate drive letter, click the Properties button, select the Policies tab. Under Write caching and Safe Removal, make sure the radio button ‘Optimize for quick removal’ is selected.

I have WinXP Home, and I love not being warned that I have unplugged a device improperly. Now let’s wait while someone tells us why Optimize for Quick Removal is bad or unsafe…
