How is it possible to do an "fi" ligature.
I have Photoshop CS, Windows XP
and am trying to get one in Adobe Garamond Expert Old Style Italic?

Depends on your font.

Or you can hand draw it yourself.

Open charmap.exe, the character map, and select your font then look for the ligature. Either copy/paste from charmap or use the ALT+Numeric code.

You can’t do ‘faux’ ligatures

Dennis,

‘Expert’ font sets were created for Windows Type 1 faces as a way to enable things like ligatures, which were, at one time, easier to do with Macs. I don’t know if there is anything equivalent in PS 8 (CS), but other Adobe apps (e.g., Illustrator) would automatically substitute the ligatures on command if you had the corresponding Expert set installed.

There were at least two problems with this method: 1) Expert sets were limited to a handful of typefaces, severely restricting your choices if you wanted to use ligatures; and 2) cross-platform type problems were only exacerbated.

The better way to do these things today is with OpenType fonts.

Dennis,

I’m in PS7, so forgive me if this doesn’t work in PS8. With the text tool active…

Choose Adobe Garamond in the typeface dropdown window (either in the options bar or the character palette). Choose Exp or Exp Ital (or whatever it might be called) from the font selection dropdown just to the right of the typeface dropdown. (It should be there among regular, bold, italic, etc., if you have the corresponding Expert set installed and active.)

Now use capital letters V, W, X, Y, and Z to enter ff, fi, fl, ffi, and ffl ligatures, respectively. Note that not all Expert sets will have all five ligatures.

Is that the ligature you want….The second suggestion you got….character map…cut and paste…that is the right answer. Forget about typing in Unicode….its been so long since I have done it I have forgotten how…but you don’t need to know how.

In CharMap, click on the character you want, then on the Select and Copy buttons in that order. That puts the character(s) into the clipboard.

In PS, with the text tool active, paste. Make sure the typeface you were viewing in CharMap is selected in PS.

Dennis,

In Adobe Garamond Export Capital ‘W’ will give you the ‘fi’ ligature and Capital ‘V’ the ‘ff’ ligature
