Hi Group,

I’m trying to open a jpg file sent to me by a friend. I get an error message when I try to open it. "invalid JPEG marker type" Any ideas on how to open this file would be appreciated.

What OS, platform, etc.? I would guess the jpeg was damaged in transit. Have your friend zip the file and resend it.

try to open the file with irfanview, then save it as a tiff.

The JPEG file is corrupt. Some programs, such as ACDSee, can read a corrupt JPEG up to the point where it is damaged, so part of the JPEG may display fine and part of it may be garbled. Internet Explorer may be able to do the same thing.

Thanks to all for your replies. I was able to open it on my laptop. I’m not sure why it would open there and not on my desktop.

I have seen that before, can’t remember what program I opened it with but it wouldn’t open in PS. it wasn’t corrupted either.

To the OP – glad you got it opened. PS is very picky about JPGs that are not coded 100% correctly, or are corrupted in some way. "Invalid JPG… " is a common error message. Many other image viewing programs are less critical of the JPG data and will respond differently than PS. Having a few other image programs is a good thing here. It is possible that the difference between the two computers is which program is assigned by the OS to Open JPGs. As mentioned, Irfanview is a good one, as is ThumbsPlus. Both have saved me many times with JPGs that PS chokes on.
