Greyscale layer mask

Is it possible to use a greyscale image as a layer mask in PS7? I’ve tried creating a layer mask and pasting into it, but that just creates a new standard layer with the greyscale image in.

A bit stuck now, so help appreciated.

You need to Option-Click on the Layer Mask to make the actual mask visible and then paste into that.
