.psd File corruption

I am seeing a potentially serious file corruption problem. Several of my files with the .psd extension have lost that association and cannot be opened anywhere. The Photoshop icon (the feather) is changed to the MS flag.

Now curiously, every file that has changed has a copy. In some instances, this file is flattened so I cannot go back to redo things (that’s why it’s a copy).

The most current event is to a file created yesterday to investigate a sharpening plug-in (Focus Magic), but other files that have been corrupted don’t use that plug-in.

I also installed a patch that allows psd files to create thumbnails in Windows Explorer. It installs some registry items and a psicon.dll in C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Shell

What I don’t know is when all this started, because the corrupted files don’t show up in the Browser, and unless I remember the file as actually existing, I may not know something happend to it.

Any clues? I have already set the psicon.dll to old, but have not cleaned the registry items. Also, is there any way to recover these files? Trying to append the .psd to the file does not work.

Oh, I am running PSCS on W2K, sp4, and I have recently installed the Adobe Refresh patch.

try using "open as" in ps on the files if you’re sure they’re psd. are the really corrupted or have they just lost the association. as you know, it can be dangerous messing with the registry. i’d remove the keys you added then reinstall cs. that should overwrite any required keys with the default values.

Total reinstall or install over the top?

over the top should work… choose custom and select the types you want to associate w/photoshop.

Sorry if this is totally off-base, but here’s one thing to try. Open any folder in Windows. Go to the Tools Menu, and select Folder Options. Choose the View tab. Look for the "Hide file extensions for known file types", and make sure it is NOT checked. (This is among the first things I change every time I install Windows.) Now, look at your files. You’ll probably notice that its extension is gone. Rename the file and make sure the name ends in ‘.psd’. It should now open fine.

The problem is that if you have "Hide file extensions for known file types" checked, then changing the name of the file does nothing. If the file was named "picture.txt", it would still only appear as "picture", and when you rename it to "picture.psd", it’s actually being changed to "picture.psd.txt", but the ".txt" is still hidden, so it looks like a ..psd file, but won’t actually run, because it still thinks it’s a .txt file. (Virus writers use this technique to fool newbies into running malicious software, naming files something like
"BrittneySpears.jpg.exe", so people who don’t know any better assume it’s just a harmless JPG file, and open the file and screw everything up, yet another reason to turn this option off.)

Hope this helps…

Hmmm. Today, I tried to rename the file again, simply appending the .psd extension. It worked.

Don’t ask me why! I did nothing else.

Time to back up those files? 🙂

They are backed up to another HD. And some are on CD’s. But it would take well over 100Cd’s to do a complete, off loaded backup, and I am starting to wonder about the lifespan of those devices. I have settled on a brand and type that proports to have logevity, but not all my cd’s are of this material. 🙁

Probably time to either get another external, say 250G, or install a DVD burner. Let’s see: 4.7 G x100 is 470G, enough I guess. How long does it take to burn a DVD?

Maybe I need to flatten and get rid of extra versions….NAH!

Thanks!
