Not sure if it helps, but Windows help files have always been slow to load for me – A fact I am painfully reminded of every time I go to rename something (F2), and my finger slips (F1).

I think that Adobe help files are typically in HTML format, rather than default Windows help files (CHM or HLP). At least they’ve been that way up until PS7, and I know that Illustrator 9 is the same way. Not sure if they’ve changed their ways for CS, but I doubt it. (HTML files are by their nature cross-platform, so they don’t have to write different files for Mac and PC the way you would with CHM or HLP files.) However, this means that if there’s a problem, it’s with the machine’s interpretation of HTML files, which should open your default internet browser. If some link has been broken and PS doesn’t know what your default browser is for some reason, this could cause the help files not to read. Reinstalling your browser might be worth a try… (I’m assuming you use IExplorer, but if you’ve got, say, Mozilla or Opera, there’s a chance they won’t read correctly. Not a big chance, but you never know.)

Hank,

See: <http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2b316.htm>.

Ignore the references to v.7 and check the remainder

thanks for the replies.
It seems like it’s not the browser I can open other html files with it, but still can’t figure out why cs help files wont work. How can I reinstall just the help files without the whole program .I must have activated my copy at least 6 times already.
Thank HANK

Hank,

I must have activated my copy at least 6 times already.<<

That’s not a problem – RE-activations do not count against the allowed number.

I’ve found another Techdoc reference for you to view:

327280 Online Help for Adobe Application Doesn’t Open or Returns an Error in Windows XP
http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/2b606.htm

The main points are:
Solution 2
If you use Microsoft Photo Editor, make sure that it isn’t running in the background, and then open the online Help:
1. Right-click the Task Bar, and choose Task Manager from the pop-up menu.
2. Click the Applications tab.
3. Select Microsoft Photo Editor from the list, and then click End Task.
4. Open the online Help from the Adobe application.

Solution 3
Remove the following applications (including trial versions) from your computer: AVG Anti-Virus System, Trident Software PowerZip, and eMerge WinAce.

Note: To completely remove these applications, make sure to remove their entries in the Windows registry. For more information, contact the manufacturer of each application.

len none of those apply here. Now that I’m thinking about when I first noticed the problem & tried to reinstall cs it would not unininstall using the add remove programs it kept hanging on something in the help files so I manually deleted the help file from adobe folder. I was than able to uninstall but I think I screwed something up doing that.Any more ideas?

You probably left some registration entries which have corrupted, but I can’t point you to the location in the registry, sorry.

I would try another uninstall/reinstall

thanks for all the help here. Finally got tired of trying to figure this out so I ended up using my ghost image. First time I had to use it & was surprised how well it worked. Everthing is good again.

Thanks again HANK

I thought I would send a quick note to let you all know the problem I ran into in the hopes it may help you. Photoshop CS was loading fine until one day it started taking 5 minutes to start. I took the steps recommended here and blew away the "Presets" and "Plug-Ins" folders and started adding directories one by one after verifying Photoshop was loading properly. Come to find out, I had a shortcut within "Layouts" to another directory for ease of navigation. Once the shortcut was removed, Photoshop loaded in under 8 seconds. CS was choking on this link and taking forever to clear (or it followed the link and tried to process all of the files in the directory it was pointing).

Good luck…
