I have just purchased a new Dell laptop that is a P4 , fast processor, 512MB of RAM and PS6 is running like a dog.

I have a 32MB graphic card which is the same as what I had on my old P3 700 which ran MUCH better.

The only thing is now I am using XP rather than 2000.

I have increased the amount of RAM that PS uses right up to 90% !!!!!

How about that cache setting ? Will that help ?

Any other settings that might be causing problems here ?

Thanks
Tony

You don’t just happen to be running any Norton apps, are you?

(And please tell me you’ve updated to PS 6.01)

Yes I do run Nortons….and No I have not updated to 6.1 !! I guess I should at least update !

As for Nortons, what do you suggest? Turn it off while I work ? Is Nortons notorious for slowing down PS?

Thanks,

Tony

Have you updated XP? And, in particular, have you downloaded and installed the HotFix Q811493. If you have you’ll find that everything concerning imaging slows down. Try uninstalling the HotFix if you have it (you can check in Add/Remove programs if it’s there). If you uninstall it, it will give you all sorts of dire warnings. Ignore them and only reinstall if you get any problems.

Also, it’s possible you have XP SP1. If you have, and can uninstall SP1, do so. Then go to MS and download SP1a. This fixes the slowdown problems caused by SP1 (which is a different problem to the HotFix above).

Yes I did have the Q811493 fix installed. I went to the Microsoft site and they say that there is an updated version of this fix that over comes these speed issues.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;811493

So, I installed the new version rather than deleting the old one. Will see if that helps.

I have also updated to 6.1 which seems to have helped too.

Many thanks for the help.

MS is working harder than Apple to get more "switchers" don’t you think?

On my XP desktop, I get significant speed changes when I fiddle with the Scratch Disks settings. I have 3 hard drives, all fast, but get the fastest PS processing when I set the first scratch disk to the same drive as my Windows swap file (in spite of the PS warnings to not do this!)

Just my 2 cents.

You’ll get a faster response if you switch your Windows scratch disk to a drive other than C.

As somebody pointed out here not long ago, having your scratch disk on another disk but in the same channel is going to do nothing at all.. EIDE disks on the same channel CANNOT work simultaneously. Now since you have three drives you do have one on another channel, use that one and you should see an improvement in speed.

I haven’t experienced slowdowns at all with SP1. In fact I use it right now here on WinXP Pro.

Funny they don’t mention that…

Maybe because very few have experienced it.

The you’ve been very very lucky. MS were showered with complaints such that they produced a HotFix within two weeks. Which must be a record for MS. It was all over the newsgroups and useful newsletter like Woody’s Windows Watch.

See above.
