When I try to ‘save as’ an image file into a different folder, Photoshop just quits abruptly without saving. I must save in the same folder from which I retrieved the file.

I’ve tried rebooting and reinstalling Photoshop CS but those didn’t help.

Have you deleted your prefs file? If not do so – Details in the FAQ at top of this forum’s topic list

<sarcasm>Try buying a new computer. There’s nothing wrong with CS </sarcasm>

Seriously, there have been numerous Save As problems; I think yours makes number 3 or maybe 4. To my knowledge, Adobe has addressed none of them because… (see second sentence in first paragraph). In this case, however, it really does sound as if you may well have a conflict in your system that is hosing things. If deleting prefs does not help, try it in safe mode if you can and see what happens.

A clue! The files that befuddled me were 16-bit and more than 50-meg in size on disk. I just did a ‘Save As’ on a 3.7 meg file successfully.

I had deleted Prefs but couldn’t get into Safe Mode, and that’s happened before even when I ‘sit on’ the F8 key.

I had exactly the same problem with large files and 14 bit images. Eventually the whole of the folder I was trying to save into got corrupted to such an extent that it would not open in windows explorer to view the contents. It’s v aggravating as I lost some recent not backed up work. I have reloaded XP and all photoshop and so far is working OK, but would like to know if there is a fix for this to stop is happening again.

Any way to diagnose if a hard drive problem, every thing else works five, with no error messages at start up or operation?

chkdsk with surface scan checked. open the case and make sure all the cables are well seated. dust out while you’re in there. make sure to wear an anti-static wrist strap.
