I was using Photoshop 5.5 on a Win XP system. I bought a new scanner–Epson Perfection 3200. The scanner came with PS Elements and when I installed the scanner and PS Elements, everything I do in PS 5.5 is saved showing the Elements emblem. I guess this means the Elements has overridden my PS 5.5? How can I get rid of the Elements and use my 5.5?

If I upgrade to PS 7.0 or PS CS, will it overwrite both the 5.5 & the Elements or what further problems will I encounter? If I scan in Elements I get Epson Scan. When scanning into PS 5.5, I get Silver Fast SE.

How can I get this to save my files into 5.5 or a upgraded version?

I am lost here.

either manually, via file associations using the windows explorer, or you could reinstall 5.5 and let it take back all it’s associations.

If I upgrade to PS 7.0 or PS CS, will it overwrite both the 5.5 & the Elements

when you select custom installation, you get to choose what file types to either a) leave alone, b) associate with PS, or c) associate with image ready. that’s for both CS and 7. Not sure if 5.5 does it that way, but I vaguely think I remember that it does.

If I scan in Elements I get Epson Scan. When scanning into PS 5.5, I get Silver Fast SE.

not sure what’s the problem there. in 7 and cs you should be able to choose from multiple installed devices though.

In Elements 2.0, under Edit > File Association , you may be able to limit what files are associated with Elements. That won’t give them back to Pshop 5.5 automatically, though.

Thanks Dave for the suggestions.

So it looks like the easiest way is to reinstall the 5.5 or go ahead with the upgrade. Even though the scanner came with Elements, I should be able to use it with any version of Photoshop by selecting files in a custom installation?

Getting rid of file associations using windows explorer–looks like this could get me in trouble. I am a real novice! I have enough problems with installations!

This is only part of my headache. I am taking a class using 7.0 on a Mac. I burned my class project on a CD via Toast and can’t pull it up on my pc! Should I get a flash drive and forget about burning a CD or do you think the problem is a software backward compatibility issue?

If you can’t even read the CD-R, you probably burned to Macintosh format only, you need to burn to ISO 9660 or Joliet for Windows to read.
