Okay, I just did that and the same thing. Progam loads and then stops responding. The only way I can do anything with it is to CAD and end task. 🙁
Try starting Windows in safe mode and then launch PS.

I tried safe mode, but it requires at least a 256 color display and I guess my card only offers 16 colors in safe mode.
I then decided to reinstall PS7 over the top of the current PS7 … that didn’t work.
I am now going to uninstall both PS7 and the new software, reboot and reinstall 7 and see what happens.

something’s interfering. type msconfig from start> run to selectively turn off everything that’s starting with your system (use the startup tab). if it works, start re-enabling everything one or 3 at a time until you narrow it down.
I know you said you turned it off, but I had mega-problems with norton IS… I’m wondering if it’s still a problem. Anywho, give "msconfig" a shot before you decide to reformat.
I have had NIS on this system since the beginning and had no issues with it … ever!
I will try the selective restart and see if that helps.
At least a reformat won’t be completely painful, as I do have a Ghost backup of most of the system. I will need to reinstall some things though. It will take a couple of hours to get it all back to the way it was and I don’t really want to use that time today unless I absolutely must.
Selective startup didn’t work either. I only had Explorer running in the task manager and PS still wouldn’t work properly. I noticed on the TWAIN portion of the loading that it was still seeing my HP scanner, which has been replaced. I removed, via Add/Remove programs, the references to the HP scanner, rebooted but still no joy.
It’s pointing more and more towards a reformat/restore. 🙁
I had no choice and did a reformat and restore of my image. It took a little while to get things back in order, as the image was a tad old. As a result, I now have a *new* image of my puter!
I still wish I knew what happened though. 🙁

I am now going to restore the image, yet again and see what is going on. PS6 runs on this machine, but PS7.0.1 goes into "not repsonding" mode as soon as it launchs (splash screen goes away).

It’s a longshot, but have you tried turning hardware acceleration down to zero. If that fixes it, that would indicate a video driver problem.
And yes, I know it’s a REAL longshot, but it’s easy to do and will eliminate the video driver as an issue.

Last night it worked, today it’s not. 🙁
and now, after the restore it works.
the only thing I did last night was 1) a selective start up and 2) defrag.
maybe when I rechecked the selective startup I missed a checkbox??
this is too weird.
I have this problem except after the splash screen the program doesnt even load, it just shuts down. It does not even get pass the splash screen.
I noticed it that it first began after I installed the security update for Direct X. Did you notice when this accured with you Grasshopper?
I did remove the update and tried to reinstall ps7 after the uninstall of Direct X, but no luck.
I am running PS7 on Win2k OS.
I need to get this running on my machine ASAP for work.

I went to MS’s site for updates, but that was after the PS7 install and it ran … for a day.
In your case, watch the splash screen and see exactly what it was loading when it failed. It could be bad fonts, twain drivers etc. Knowing where it crashes would be helpful to figuring out why it crashes.

Hi,
Had exactly the same problem. The problem seems to lie with the preferences. I took my preferences from another machine, which was runing PS7 fine. They are in:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings
(if logged on as administrator, if not, use the preference for your log on))
Copied all those files into the same location on the machine with the fault. It worked for me.
I guess this is the same as resetting your preferences, instructions for that you should be able to find in the FAQs, supposedly. I don’t know how to do it.
