I’m using PhotoShop 6.0 at home and 7.0 at work. I hate the way that everytime (in 6.0) you use the line tool it creates a new layer. Any way around this?

In the Options Bar on the left there are some icons. The one you have selected makes the Line a Shape Layer. Choose one of the others (you probably want the solid fill one).
