The background around my working area when I expand it has changed colors and I can’t get it back to gray — my working area is white, but the entire mask around it is an awful green that is very distracting — how can I turn it back to gray?

Set forground color;
R = 192
G = 192
B = 192

Select Paint Bucket from Toolbar.

Shift + Click on presently green area (the "apron" as it’s often called).

Phos,

Isn’t the default work area gray 50% (128/128/128)? Or has it changed in CS?

It’s always been 1923, as far as I know.

Oops, you’re right. I was confusing the work area gray with the pseudo-desktop gray (by which I mean the background behind the splash screen at PS startup or behind non-maximized image windows — hey, I’m just making up these terms). The latter appears to be a 50% gray.

The following from PS7 html help did, however, throw me off. I suspect it’s wrong.

To change the screen display mode:

Click a screen mode button in the toolbox:

The left button displays the default window with a menu bar at the top and scroll bars on the sides. The center button displays a full-screen window with a menu bar and a 50% gray background, but no title bar or scroll bars. The right button displays a full-screen window with a black background, but no title bar, menu bar, or scroll bars.
