My photshop 7 keeps crashing(stop responding) when I’m working halfway through. I’m using Windows 98 with Pentium 4 processor and a built-in graphic card on the mainboard. My PC detects 96MB of RAM.

That’s not really enough to run Photoshop successfully. How much free disk space do you have?

You could also have a bad video driver. As a diagnostic, try turning down Hardware acceleration to zero. If that helps, you definitely need a new video driver.

96 megs of RAM and you’re likely sharing that with the video card. That’s simply not enough memory.

I’ve just upgraded my system recently. There’s a about 35GB of free space on my hard disk. And how do I turn down the Hardware acceleration?

thank you.

I had problems with Photoshop 7 on Win98 and Win2000 systems, si I give advice from experience.

On windows 2000 96MB is not enough, I had problems with 128MB with parts of photoshop like SAVE FOR WEB, EXTRACT TOOL etc… they were not responsive.

On Windows 98 with 128MB PHotoshop 7 worked OK, but only on tested on small screen size files.

But remember Photoshops minimum require is I think 192MB ?.

Another Big factor with Photoshop and win9x systems no matter how much RAM is that, Windows runs out of resources when running photoshop…. and windows/applications freeeze. You can monitor this via the RESOURCE MONITOR program provided with windows. If the resource get below 10%, its DANGEROUS. One way to reduce this is to load less programs as possible including tray icons, and run Photoshop.

I was forced to upgrade to Windows 2000/Windows XP system for this resource problem, and suggest you do too, but they also require more than 96MB RAM. I suggest 256MB minimum.

Are you sure your PC has only 96Mb ram, for a pENTIUM 4 system ?. or is there a fault ?. I would have expected atleast 256MB minimum for Pentium 4 days….

I suggest 256MB minimum.

And I would suggest way more than that. I wouldn’t even try to run WinXP with less than 256 and that’s just for the operating system.

RAM is cheap. Buy all you can afford.

That’s because I "DIY" upgraded my system. And my system was suppose to have 128MB of RAM. But the display card took up 32MB of it. So it is left with only 96MB. However, even I’ve changed the hardware acceleration level to none, the program sometimes still "hang", but just not as serious as full hardware acceleration level.

So now, should I add in more RAM? Or changed my display card? currently I’m using S3 display card. Anyway, is there any most suitable display card for running photoshop?

Activist,

just not as serious as full hardware acceleration level.<<

Then you need a new video driver

both. get a card that doesn’t rely on system ram. and get more system ram.
