Hi,

terrible disaster happened to most of my photos stored as jpeg files on my hard drive.
I had to reformat it so compressed them to several rar files in order to be able to transfer them to network drives and back ( had not enough space for original files)

Now I see that most of these jpeg files are distorted :
– some lack part of original data
– some have all data but somehow "puzzled" ( left upper part went right, and so on) sometimes in 4 parts, sometimes in even more parts !

I suppose they are "unrecoverable" or does someone have an idea ( other then reediting them in photoeditor software ! : I have 600 of them to recover !!!)

Hope someone can help !

Thanks !

I may be wrong but you have archived already compressed files and this may account for your distortions. I’m not sure even re-editing them will help as
each time you save the file it gets more compressed and loses more information. I have read that tiff’s are best for storage.

Archiving is lossless so you won’t loose any data by doing so. Re-saving jpegs will usually cause information loss, but copying or moving the files won’t. The original poster had corruption problems not data loss due to compression.

RAR is a lossless compression format, JPEG is not. This means JPEG can achieve many times the compression of RAR. This also means RAR cannot compress JPEG pictures any further.

I’m afraid you did nothing but add a little to the overall size of the files in doing so.

Now I see that most of these jpeg files are distorted :

It sounds as if the RAR file was damaged somehow. Have you tried someting like ACDsee or ThumbsPlus to see if they might be a little more forgiving in reading the mangled data?

No but will try ( XnView and Irfanview show the distorsions)

The jpegs were fine before raring them.

I’m sorry to say they are mostly likely damaged for good, then. Sorry. I’ve had similar disasters hit my irreplaceable pictures, and I sympathize.
