I’m working with CS2 on a Win XP platform.

I have an image of a building from a strong angle and would like to add some text in the perspective of the building.

I can set the vanishing point filter OK but don’t see any to add text that will take on the perspective of the object.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Dennis

Jimmy,

Thanks, Now that I know it can be done I’ll go to NAPP to find out how. I’ll post the answer to share with those that haven’t done this yet.

Sorry Dennis but what is the ‘vanishing point filter’??

This is a new feature of CS2 that allows you to add a "grid" that has the perspective of the surface you want to modify and then the changes you make maintain the perspective of the surface.

Think of an image of a semi-trailer taken from the rear quarter. You can take a rectangular image and insert it on the side of the truck and it will automatically add the perspective to make the inserted image match the angles of the side of the trailer.

The tutorial uses a wall of a building with one window, taken at an acute angle. The window is copied and as you move the copy along the wall, it changes the angles of the window to match the perspective of the wall as you move it closer or further. It even allows you to drag the window around a 90 degree corner of the building and still keep the proper perspective.

While you won’t use this tool every day, it is a significant addition to the PS features when you need it.

You can not use filters on a text layer unless you first rasterize the text layer, which changes it from text into pixels. Filters only work on pixels.

Once you rasterize the text layer, you can no longer edit the text.

You do not need a filter in order to transform text to add perspective to it. Instead, use the Free Transform command. Hold down Control on your keyboard and move the corners of the free transform box to add perspective.

Hi Dennis,

You must first copy the text layer to the clipboard.

Then you paste the text once you have opened the filter.

Once pasted you can modify the selected text to fit within the perspective grid.

After doing this the text is rasterized and is not editable.

Hope this helps

Tacit & George,

I tried your solution and it works just fine. I tried this before I read your replies. It took a minute to figure out why the perspective transform was grayed out, and then I rasterized the text and it works like a champ.

Thanks for coming up with a solution. The collective knowledge in these newsgroups is amazing.

I knew of the transform solution but the vanishing point feature sounds very interesting, I am using CS version.

It is. The example I saw was a fence going off into the distance. There were three or four beaten up/missing panels. The photographer was able to copy just one usable panel with the right lighting and, after having set the vanishing point along the fence, just insert each panel in place and PS automatically sized it to fit exactly.

For those who haven’t experienced the vanishing point filter, Adobe has a tutorial on the vanishing point at

Copy the text that you want to place in perspective to the clip board before you open vanishing point.

Open your image in vanishing point, place your grids and then paste in your text.

Herb,

That works just great. Of course, I rasterized the text first.
