I wonder if you PS experts know what is the 3rd and easiest way of opening an image from within PS.

The easiest way I know of is to double-click in the interface blank area. This brings up the File/Open dialog.

There’s an easier way?

Nop, that’s it.
Do you think it is commonly known?

no operation (thank heaven!)

Didnt quite get you there dave,

crtl-n = new
enter = confirm
crtl-v = paste

opens a new document at the size of the data in the clipboard and pastes that data.

Don’t like to use the mouse so instead of double clicking I use Ctrl+O. But don’t forget to Alt double click on the picture in the File browser.

Norbert-so you don’t use the mouse at all when selecting commands? What about the ones that don’t have short cut keys?

Norbert-so you don’t use the mouse at all when selecting commands?
What about the ones that don’t have short cut keys?

I have short-cut keys for everything, in a manner of speaking:

Brightness/Contrast – Alt I A C.
Image Size – Alt I I.
Canvas Size – Alt I S.
Flatten Layers – Alt L F.

Technically, it’s just taking advantage of Windows’ Alt-access to the menus, but I now execute these commands so quickly, they may as well be keyboard shortcuts.

Incidentally, what’s up with the "customizeable" keyboard shortcuts on CS? I’m still using 7.0, but I tried out CS on somebody else’s computer, and it turns out there’s really not alot of "customization" that you can really do. I actually went through the list (I’m keyboard shortcut crazy. You should see how many hotkeys I use for 3DS Max…) However, in PSCS, almost every valid keyboard shortcut is already assigned to something by default. Why they don’t allow you to use Shift, Alt, or Alt-Shift shortcuts, I can’t understand. It leaves you with very few un-used shortcuts that you can assign to other functions that don’t have them. All we have left to our own use is a handful of Alt-Ctrl, and Alt-Shift-Ctrl combos, and the F-key action combos. That’s a very limited definition of "customizeable", I think…

So I guess there’s a 4th way and equally easy. Ofcorse knew that but didnt come to mind maybe coz didnt thought of using it.I’m gonna adopt this way if you dont mind:-) Can you help me with a list of these ALT+Letters shortcuts.
Thanks a lot.

The alt key shortcuts are awesome and are available in most Windows apps. It is easy to see their letter shortcut as it is the letter underlined in the menu. For example, File would be alt-F and the file menu will expand. Continuing to hold the alt key and press "x" will exit Photoshop.
These little shortcuts are available throughout the OS in contextual menus and dialog boxes in addition to the menu bar. So whenever you see un underlined letter the alt-key can be used.

the alt shortcuts are called "accelerator keys".

We don’t even have to continue holding the alt key. Just press alt, let go and then the letters. At least in my PS7. One more thing: after using a palette with the mouse the alt key doesn’t respond unless a mouse click is pressed on interface blank area.

P.s. How can I put a line under a letter like Stacy did?

So I guess there’s a 4th way and equally easy.

Just curious what the official ‘1st’ and ‘2nd’ ways are? I mean, you’ve got:

1. Drag and drop from an open folder into PS
2. Ctrl-O
3. Mouse to File menu and select Open
4. Alt F O (using Windows keyboard shortcuts – no point in using this one though, as Ctrl-O is just as good and 1 key faster.)
5. Double-click the grey background of PS
(methods 2-5 require you to navigate to the file in the Open File dialog.)
6. If it’s one of the last 10 files you had open (or whatever you have the Recent File List number set to – 10 is default), you can just mouse to File/Open Recent and choose from the list.
7. If it’s one of the last 9 files, this is even hot-keyable: "Alt F R 1" will open the last file, "Alt F R 2" the file before that, and so on. Any more than 9 and there’s no hotkey for it, though you can use the arrows to select it then.
8. Use the File Browser (PS 7 and later)
9. If it’s a PSD file, or any other format you’ve got set to open PS by default, just double-clicking it will open it in PS. (Technically not from "within PS", but if PS is already open, it will just quickly open the file, rather than open a second copy of PS.)
10. Even if it’s not a format that’s set to open PS by default, you can usually right-click the file and select "Open with…" and choose PS.

I think that pretty much covers it…

Bravo Darrel, its 10 out of 10, you get an A+ 🙂
Actually, maybe there are more ways (I just don’t know) but I’m counting on you. I meant though from within PS and not by FB so it is 4, according to you also (2-5). I should have been more specific and write "ways to bring up the open dialog box". My bad.

One more way that I can think of:

from the command line, you can type photoshop.exe filename.psd and it will load the file. if the file does not exist, it will open the "new document" dialog.

And if the file does exist (when specified on the command line), how can you STILL get the "new document" dialog?
GL

From the command line-sometimes it opens the file and sometimes it open the New dialog box with the file name in the name field :-0

To open with New dialog box I typed "photoshop.exe new"

By the way, how you guys find out about d.-click on empty spot? Because I found out by accident and if weren’t for that this topic wouldn’t have existed 🙂

You guys still haven’t answered.

If you specify an existing file on the command line, and it is has a file extension that Photoshop can read, how can you get Photoshop to show the new file dialog and not open the file?
