Hi all-

I am in the market for a new printer and will be using it for home-use. At the moment, the most I can afford is the $100-$200 price range. Some of my printing will be text but I’d like to be able to print photos, layouts, ads, etc…. Here’s my question: I use PS, AI, ID at work and frequently dabble at home as well. At work, we use an HP Laser (PCL) printer but I’d like my new inkijet at home to be PScript to avoid problems. I’ve looked at Canon and Epson but can’t find any information. Any ideas or recommendations? I’d be much obliged!
Thanks,
Rick

Epson was the first one to address the problems of photo printers. HP concentrated on the business market where print longevity is not important but high duty cycles are. Canon only recently discovered the ink jet market. My photo printer is an Epson Photo 1280, but it costs more than your t arget.

These three manufacturers are engaged in a marketing battle at present. What we are seeing is feature gallop (akin to the cup holder wars in the automobile business).

As Postscript, none of the printers in your target range offer it. The principal advantage to Postscript is the ability to simplify the printing by needing only one file for various makes of printers. In a former life, I supported an inhouse engineering graphics package that provided output to a lot of different terminals and printers. Postscript certainly simplified my life.

Rick,
There are some quite decent printers, I’m lusting after an Epson R800 at the moment, but I don’t think you’ll find anything with Postscript compatibility . I’ve never seen a consumer inkjet with that as an option .

Review of R800, <http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/epson_r800.html>

Rick,

Over the years, I have owned the Canon BJC-5000, S600, and now the i860. Never had a problem with any of them and used them a LOT! The current one, the i860 can be purchased retail for $149 USD, and often has a $30 USD rebate. The photo print quality is exceptional! The five ink tanks are sold separately so you only replace the one that’s empty. Not sure about the postscript thing, but I do know this is a great printer at a great price. It’s reviewed at steves-digicams.com also. A friend of mine wanted an ethernet compatible printer, and searched for months, then decided to go with the i860 instead. He loves it!

Hi there-

Thanks for the replies… Well, my 1989 Saab 9000 may have finally kicked the bucket this AM and money is even more at a premium. That effectively puts the Epson R800 WAY out of my reach…sigh…

Tom: I am just about to buy the Canon i860. So funny… I have been reading reviews on CNET, bizrate, etc all day and had decided to go with that printer but thought I’d check back on my posting.
Thanks again for the info and replies!

Rick, check out the Epson R200. I think for under $200. I have the R800 and really like it. Prints directly onto CD’s and photo’s on gloss is hard to tell from the lab.
