My friend who has it says he gets blazing fast downloads with it, so just how fast is it?
It is the same exact speed as regular dialup.
From the Netzero 3G disclaimer page:
"Speed reference based upon comparison to nationally available dial-up ISPs. NetZero HiSpeed 3G accelerates certain web page text and graphics when compared to standard dial-up Internet service. Actual results may vary. Some web pages such as secure or encrypted web pages will not be accelerated. NetZero HiSpeed 3G is not a broadband service and actual data transmission rates are not faster than standard dial-up Internet service. Transmission of files including, without limitation, streaming audio or video, digital photographs, MP3 or other music files, executable files and other downloads, is not faster using NetZero HiSpeed 3G than with standard dial-up service."
All it does is speed up the way certain Web pages (those in its cache) display. It does this by taking often-accessed Web pages, compressing them, sending the compressed Web page over the telephone line at regular dial-up speed, and then uncompressing them on the other end. Because they are compressed, they travel quickly through the telephone line.
It does not in any way speed up:
– File downloads, such as pictures, movies, or MP3s.
– Web pages that are not cached in the NetZero caching proxy server.
– Encrypted Web pages.
– Any downloads on any computer not running Windows. The system works by having proprietary NetZero compression software on your computer. It is only available for Windows.
– Downloads for people using a proxy server, such as a corporate network.
The important thing to understand is IT DOES NOT MAKE YOUR TELEPHONE CONNECTION GO FASTER. If you connect to the Internet with a 56K modem, you will still be connecting at 56K (or less). It DOES NOT increase the speed with which information passes through the phone line; it just takes the information which is going to be sent to you, compresses it so that it is smaller, and then uncompresses it when it reaches you. AOL has been doing this same exact thing for almost ten years now. You get a very good speed improvement for text-heavy Web sites, a slight improvement for some cached images on those Web sites, and zero improvement for file transfers and Web sites which are not popular enough to be in NetZero’s cache.
For more information, do a Google search for "NetZero 3G."
