Can’t save as a tif

I bought a Nikon D70 camera and installed the Nikon software. I didn’t like the Nikon software so I removed them both from my PC(Windows XP Home). Since the removal, I’ve had all sorts of problems. I have fixed all but the fact I can no longer save a file in tif format in Photoshop CS. I found a work-around by saving the file in another format like psd and then opening up Photoshop Elements and saving the psd file in tif format. I just can’t save as a tif using Photoshop CS. I have removed CS and re-installed and later, I just re-installed CS over the existing CS. Neither solved this problem.

Does anyone have a solution or suggestion for me?

Thank you,
Lynn

Have you checked your file associations
Control panel>FOLDER OPTIONS>FILE TYPES
look up TIFF in the list and make sure it is set to open in PS CS (preview can be left on windows pic and fax viewer)

It’s usually due to a known problem where Nikon inserts it’s own .8bf files into PS plug ins. Look for any files that are Nikon.8bf or similar and remove them. Everything should then work correctly.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried this after you suggested it, but the file association was okay – it was set to open in PS CS. Lynn

Thanks Hecate, I had previously deleted the Nikon .8bf files. This did not help this problem though. It did allow me to open Nikon NEF(RAW) files with the Photoshop RAW convertor.

Thanks, I did try this after you suggested trashing preferences but it didn’t fix the problem that I can’t save as a TIFF in PS CS.

Could you first tell us HOW the problem manifests itself? Saying "I can’t save as TIFF" doesn’t mean anything. What happens when you try? Can’t you choose TIFF as an option? Can you choose it but do you get some kind of error when the computer tries to save the image? If so, what does that error say?

Please tell us what happens when you try to save as TIFF. If you do not give us detailed, step-by-step information about how you are trying to save as TIFF and detailed information about what happens when you try (including word-for-word any error messages that you see), we can not help you.

I think I solved the problem. I again removed PS CS and re-installled it. I deleted all references to NEF and .8bf files. I copied the raw
2.4 update to Photoshop Folders. Now, I could save all non raw files
as tif, something I couldn’t do before. Then, I discovered that I’ve been forgetting to convert my raw images from 16 bit to 8 bit before attempting to save as a tif. When I did the 8 bit conversion, I now can save all my jpegs, raw images, and PSD files as tif if I want to. I want to thank all who responded for their time. I feel kind of dumb on failing to convert to 8 bit first.
Thanks,
Lynn

That wasn’t the reason. You can save 16 bits TIFF as well.

I wondered about that. I don’t remember converting to 8 bit before saving, but I thought that I must have, especially since it works now if I convert first.
So, I just opened a raw image file in 16 bit mode and tried to save as a tiff without converting to 8 bit mode. Here’s the message I received:

Could not save as "C:\…..\filename.tif" because of a problem with the file-format interface.

The same file saves as a tif when I convert to 8 bit mode first. Lynn

The same file saves as a tif when I convert to 8 bit mode first. Lynn

Another problem I just discovered – When I add an Adjustment Layer, change the mode from 16 bit to 8 bit color, and save as a tiff, it saves the file, but when I open it, there is no Adjustment Layer on the saved file. Also, the file was saved as an Adobe RGB file; when opened, the message informs me there was an embedded color that is not supported.

Seems to me that your copy of Photoshop is quite mixed up, or you are trying to do all sorts of things you shouldn’t do. There shouldn’t be a problem saving TIFF with adjustment layers and if you use Photoshop CS2 you can also save those kinds of files in 16 bits (earlier versions do not support layers in 16 bits). Of course you should also not get messages that embedded colors aren’t supported…

In an earlier message, you said you use Photoshop CS though, not CS2. If that is true, how can you add an adjustment layer to a 16 bits file anyhow? Are you perhaps using CS2 and CS together without realizing which one at what moment?…

Oops. Forget about this part. Of course CS can also save 16 bits layered files. It’s PS 7 and lower that couldn’t.

I am using just CS, not CS2. After reinstalling CS from the CD, I still have these problems mentioned earlier, plus another I just discovered – I have a lot of Tiff image files I saved earlier that must have adjustment layers still on them because some of my tiffs, when opened don’t hsve any detail, just solid colors full of noise. You can save a tiff file with adjustment layers in CS. I remember the notice that doing so causes the file size to be larger.
I believe the Nikon software must have taken over some of my PC’s files that affect tiff’s and removing/reinstalling CS doesn’t help. I may have to save my images and personal files to a CDR and then format my drive and reinstall Windows XP and the programs I need. I’m hoping someone can suggest something easier so keep your ideas coming in. Thanks,
Lynn

I solved this problem, or maybe I should say my son solved it for me. He was at my house one day and was searching Windows Explorer and noticed there were two copies of most of my Photoshop program folders. After deleting the extra folder copies, my problems went away. What I think happened was when I tried to save or open a tiff file in Photoshop, the program went to the extra folder and ran into problems. Some of the extra folders had missing files. I think the extra folders were created when re-installing Photoshop. Thank you everyone who responded with suggestions or questions to try to help me. Everything works the way it should now.
