I’ve read a few things about Irfanview and it sounds like a neat program. Moreover, Irfan sounds like a really bright guy who deserves much success.

The question is, however, that since I have CS, why would I want Irfanview?

This is in no way a slight towards Irfanview, but rather a simple question. What does Irfanview do for the novice like me.

The only thing that comes immediately to mind is that it might be a lot faster since it is so much smaller a program…

TIA
Dave

I have jpg and CRW filetype asociations set to run Irfanview. There is no way I want to fire up PS every time I click on an image. If I was a full time PS professional I might want that.

irfanview is great for stepping through the initial pile of frames from the CF card, especially since I can mix CRW and jpg in a folder and see them all in irfanview.

Don’t blame me. I voted for Gore.

That’s it – it’s quite a bit faster, so it’s worth setting associations to use it.

All other comments agreed with, plus it will losslessly rotate (90 180 270) JPGs

Irfan launches in a second and is very useful for batch renaming, rotating. etc
I shoot mostly vertical and use Irfan to transfer my images from my flash card to a folder on my drive rotating them 90 degrees and renaming them.
Irfan is also very good at opening images PS calls damaged. Irfan creates slide shows in a snap.
You can work in PS while importing from a scanner or camera with Irfan. Irfan is free but don’t forget to send the guy a few bucks, he really deserves them for his software is very useful.

And another plus is that it is less critical when it comes to JPGs. PS will balk with any irregularity in the JPG, and Irfanview will open many marginal images, which can then be re-saved for work in PS. I know that re-saving is not the best solution with regards to JPGs, but sometimes this is the only way to open the little buggers.

Yes, Photoshops’ picky behavior with jpg images is most annoying. I rarely use them, but when it’s necessary, I often must open/save in another app, which doesn’t do the end result a lot of good.

When you save, don’t do it as jpg. Use tiff. Then you wont add to the compression artifacts.
