I am trying to clear up a question regarding the printing of an "untagged document" in Photoshop. This document is an IT8 Target I need to create printer profiles. The target file is a .tif and comes with the software with no profile attached, thus the "untagged". I need to be positive it prints as untagged for accurate profile creation.

So… I thought I had done that but read something today about Print with Preview on the Epson site in a .PDF called "How to Use ICC Profiles" for profiles they have available for download. Let me first set it up. Here is the selections I have for the untagged print:

On thePrint with Preview pop-up:
select "Color Management" from the drop down
set Source Space = Document:Untagged
set Print Space = Same as Source

The Source space above shows "Untagged" as that is the target I am printing with no profile. Also, let me assure you I have ALL color management turned off in the Epson printer driver, which is for an Epson Stylus Pro 4000.

OK.. what I read today is that with the choices above, the untagged document will be assigned the working space profile by Photoshop, which for me is Adobe RGB 98. That is the question. Did I actually print the target with an Adobe RGB 98 profile?

Which leads me to the last question. If I select "Output" instead of "Color Management" on the Print with Preview pop-up, AND the file is "Untagged" with no profile, AND I have all color management off in the Epson driver….. will this assure I print the target as Untagged?

Thanks

One of the few good uses of "Same as Source" is to print the IT-8 target file without color management. Your example of printing the "untagged " image using the "Same as Source" output profile is the right thing to do .

Thanks Brent. I thought what I had been doing was correct and will continue to do so, but when I read this:

< http://prographics.epson.com/downloads/icc/How-to-Use-ICC-Pr ofiles.pdf>

on page 5, I interpreted it differently.

Jim,
Printing an IT-8 target is really the reverse of process, I suppose. All color management should be off so that the print reflects the printer’s "native" characteristics for the profile. Once the profile has been created and is in use, then Page 5 of the reference is appropriate for using the profile. There are plenty of ways to get confused . I have an especially hard time working with a strange print driver, deciding on the likely best settings. Ian Lyons’ site can be very useful in deciding what is important sometimes, <http://www.computer-darkroom.com/> .
