I set my D70 to shoot JPEG images in Adobe RGB but when I download my images, the color space has been changed to S-RGB. I may be wrong, but I believe if I change the color space to Adobe RGB when I open the file, the extra color gamut or information is lost because the file was already changed to S-RGB when I downloaded the picture. I think the culprit is Windows. I use Windows XP and a card reader to download the pictures by dragging them from the card reader drive into a folder under My Pictures. In other words, I use the Windows software rather than some bought software.
Would anyone recommend a freeware, shareware, or relatively cheap program that I could use to download these images that would keep the images in Adobe RGB? I am hoping to keep the cost low($50 or less)but if I have to, I will spend more.
I know I could shoot RAW and the files can be opened in Adobe RGB and I do that sometimes, but I shoot most of my images as JPEG’s. Thanks,
Lynn

Why would the transfer of bits and bytes change the structure of a file? I suppose it has something to do with the prog you use to open the files. Some default settings?

I can’t see why Windows would do that. Are you sure your settings didn’t change back to a default after changing batteries or powering off? I’d double check the settings before doing anything else.

My camera was and still is set for Adobe RGB. I have been dragging the files into a folder under My Pictures using Windows Explorer. When I open the file in Photoshop CS, I’m asked if I want to keep them in S-RGB or change to my workspace which is Adobe RGB.
My theory is Windows only recognizes S-RGB and not Adobe RGB. If I look at the file that’s on my memory card using Photoshop Browser, I can see the file is in Adobe RGB. I can open each file from the Browser and save it and the file remains Adobe RGB. But that’s got to be the hard way of keeping the file in Adobe RGB.
A friend of mine uses ThumbsPlus to download his pictures and they remain Adobe RGB. I could buy that program but I hope for something cheaper.

That’s weird, but I don’t see how Windows could change the file if it hasn’t been opened. I use a card reader as well and my Canon files remain RAW files. 🙂 I use TP as well, but I don’t use it to take the pics off the card. My partner has a "go everywhere" Nikon 5700 and doesn’t have the problem with NEF files. However, they, of course, don’t carry a specific colour tag. Have you thought of using RAW (you’ll get better results overall)?

Of course, that doesn’t solve your immediate problem but, whilst you suspect Windows, I suspect the camera. It’s more likely that it isn’t saving them as AdobeRGB IMHO.

I know the camera is saving the images as Adobe RGB because when I open the image from the card reader in Photoshop Browser, they retain the Adobe RGB. It’s when I drag them in Windows Explorer from my memory card reader to a folder that I lose Adobe RGB.
Dragging RAW images using Windows Explorer works fine both with my old Canon G1 and my Nikon D70. I have my Adobe RAW converter set to open images in Adobe RGB. I would open all my images with the Photoshop Browser if it were quicker.

I do like RAW and would use it more after I buy a larger memory card. But I also want to take advantage of the camera’s RGB color choice. Thanks,
Lynn

May I ask why you’re bothering to drag them if you can open them directly from the card? Just opening them in PhotosShop and saving them to your computer and then erasing them from the card should work quite nicely. No need to drag. Or am I missing something important?

Cyl, Opening the image from the card in Photoshop works fine. The problem with this is time. While I have no problem with a few images, Having 20 or more images can be real time consuming. It would be better if I could download them from the card all at once. Using my old Canon G1, I could download 30 images in a few seconds. And that might include some RAW images. I used BreezeBrowser which was either freeware or shareware but it only worked for Canon camera images. I need a program that works with my Nikon images.

Lynn, I think this is an issue with the camera not embedding the AdobeRGB metadata in the EXIF of the JPEG. I believe the image is still in AdobeRGB colourspace, but as Photoshop doesn’t see a header, it assumes it is in sRGB colour space to start with. I think you need to transfer your images to the hard drive using Nikon’s Free Software "NikonView", which should have come with the camera and it will open immediately it detects your camera connection to the computer. Use Nikon View 5.1.3 or later and select ‘Embed ICC profile during transfer’ option when the Nikon Transfer window opens before transferring images to HD. Note: this option is not used by default. Software applications can then read this data when opening the image.

Also make sure you have the latest firmware update for the camera which is now at Version 2.
Here’s the link to the firmware from Nikon Europe:

Hi!

I have a simailar problem. Camera set to Adobe RGB but some images are saved as S-RGB. I found that the images saved as S-RGB are the ones I have taken with the D70 set to "Auto". Could this be the issue here?! If so, is there a workaround for getting the images taken in Auto mode to be saved to Adobe RGB?

Nigel,
Thanks much for your help. I upgraded the firmware after reading your post, especially the one regarding dpreview. I tried dragging an image from my memory card to my image folder and when I opened it in Photoshop CS, the image was in Adobe RGB.
I was wrong about Windows XP being the culprit. It was the old Nikon firmware.
I don’t need to find a program to download my images, just drag them using Windows Explorer.
Thanks to everyone who made suggestions and those who bothered to read my post.
I got Nikon PictureProject and a trial for Nikon Capture. I tried them but the default for my RAW images became the converter on PictureProject. It wasn’t nearly as good as the RAW file converter that comes with Photoshop CS so I removed both programs. The program you mentioned, Nikon View, did not come on the CD with the camera. I checked it out on the web and it was a real large download, about 35MB. I didn’t download it.

Glad you got it sorted Lynn. I’m sorry about the Nikon View software. It’s a shame you don’t have broadband, as it wouldn’t take long to download. Perhaps a friend who has can burn a copy to CD for you? Maybe try and get your camera dealer to order in a copy for you?

Lynn,

If you have a D70 you should also have Nikon View, correct. Just download your card into Nikon View and open them in whatever program you wish when you have the time. NV should retain all the info the camera does.

Hope this helps,
Dave

PS – If for some reason you don’t have NV, you can get it for free from the Nikon site.

Sorry I took so long to reply. I hope you’re still checking this post although I don’t have any help for you. Are you saying it only happens when the camera is set to Automatic? It’s possible the camera doesn’t send RGB files to the computer when set in Auto mode. My old Canon G1 did not work in RAW mode when set in Auto mode. I know RAW and RGB are two different things but that could be the problem.

Yes, I have upgraded both A and B to ver. 2. Haven’t checked if any other mode than auto is changing the color space, . Shall do some testing. Hopefully someone else reads this and have an answer…

I transfer all my files via a flashcardreader, haven’t even hooked up the camera through the cable. So that can’t be the problem.

Richard, I just took a picture with my D70 in Auto mode. It was set for Adobe RGB on the camera but when I transferred the image to my hard drive, it was in sRGB rather than RGB. If I shoot in P, S, A, or M modes, they open on my computer in Adobe RGB (1998). I haven’t used Auto, or the other modes yet, only Program, Aperture, Shutter, or Manual. So, I would suggest that is the way the camera is meant to work. Maybe Nikon did this on purpose or maybe they aren’t aware of it. I won’t be notifying them because I rarely use Auto, if ever. You might want to let them know. I know my old Canon G1 digital camera wouldn’t shoot in RAW mode in Auto so maybe that is the reasoning the camera makers use-people who shoot in RAW or Adobe RGB (1998) don’t use Auto mode. I think they should be able to.
