I’m scanning some family photos and sometimes when using Crop and Straighten Photos, it doesn’t separate them into the individual pics. If there are three pictures in the scan, for example, it will crop around all three of them but keep them together in one scan. It’s like PS can’t tell that there are three separate photos there.

I think it’s mostly on pictures with lighter backgrounds, which means there is less contrast between the picture and the white background of the scanner. Could this be it? I thought about taping some electric blue paper over the white scanner background. Would this work better?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Jonathan Schmidt

Jonathan,

I have used the Automate>Crop and Straighten on CS quite a bit. Most of my photos had dark edges (trees, grass, etc.) I did have a few old ones that had white borders. These got straightened and cropped to the edge of the picture, not the outside of the border. I wanted the border because I thought it kept the age or period of the picture intact. I taped a piece of child’s dark construction paper to the underside of the lid (similar to what you are thinking of doing), and it worked great!
