I’m running PS7.0.1 on a P4 with 256mb RDRAM, with Windows ME. Even with all programs closed down (Ctrl-Alt-Del on each one in the Task Box) I can’t open a 60mb Tiff file. I get the message "Not enough Memory." I have no trouble opening the same file in Corel PhotoPaint 8.0 and some other programs.
In the Preferences box, under Scratch Disks & Memory, I see 228MB RAM available, and have set the memory Photoshop has available as 50%. I think that this is the default.
I have tried increasing it in steps to 70%, and down to 35% with no success.
What exactly does the phrase "Maximum (memory) Used By Photoshop" mean? Does that include the memory needed to open a given file, or just the memory needed to run Photoshop itself?
What is a rule of thumb for setting this preference?
I also have adequate scratchdisk space, with 2 drives designated as usable for scratch disks.
