Hi folks,

I’m using PS6 on XP. I scanned pages directly to PS from my handy-dandy all-in-one HP. Got some very nice bmp files. However, the files are too big for me to upload to my ftp site.

I saved each file as a gif, using the Save As function. The gifs are about 35" wide at 72 dpi. I used Image>Image Size to resize them to 8.5" wide and the function defaulted to 300dpi. Perfect, just what I need and they print out beautifully.

The only problem is, when I close the file and reopen it, it’s back to 35" wide at 72dpi. I’m I missing a step in the saving process that’s not saving the resizing? Or is it not possible to save the resizing?

Thanks in advance for any light anyone might shed on this.

Cheers, Toni

Hi Toni,

The GIF format is a compressed format that does not hold any meta data whatsoever. That means it cant retain resolution info. Resolution is only used for printing purposes, and GIF was never intended to be printed.

So no, it is not possible to save the resizing, when you are operating with the GIF format.

GIF cannot store ppi setting like many other formats.

Thanks for the quick response guys. So my client will have to resize and print them right away at their end. Oh well. It will still get the pages to layout quicker.

Are these photographic images?

GIF is only 256 colors opposed to 16 million for other formats.

But you knew that, right?

Mac,

No these are black and white page proofs with my markup in pencil highlighted in yellow. I still have to get the author’s input on the proofs, so I can’t ship the actual pages just yet. But we wanted to get my corrections to layout so we get this book to press–hence the scans.

Uh-huh. I knew the part about how many colors. I chose gifs because the files are small but crisp. I just talked to the client. They’re cool with twiddling with the files. If I weren’t so cheap, I could have more space on my website for bigger ftp files. It’s a great way to get files to a client in a hurry, so I may have to rent a little more server space.

I really appreciate your quick responses.

Gotcha…

Btw, PNG pretty much same size as GIF, if they can use them. AND, saves ppi in header.

I’ll try it. Yeah, they’re a fully loaded publishing house (albeit still working quite nicely, thank you, on older versions of most everything) so they can use anything I send them.

Cheers, Toni
