Modelling a cylindrical interior starship

Does Photoshop have the necessary features to model a 3D cylindrical interior world, like the one envisioned in my sci-fi novel here:-

http://www.astroscience.org/abdul-ahad/firstarktoalphacentau ri.htm

Now that my novel (*first* of hopefully a few on a 50,000 year long adventure!) is complete, I was hoping to start drawing some scenes that paint the world in its proper context.
Is it possible to depict a curved interior view using Photoshop that can be rotated to show various angles and geometry of lighting inside such a world? I want to map "flat" images taken from both ground level and aerial shots from high altitude on Earth, onto the interior of the cylindrical ship sailing between the stars.

How difficult is that to do?

Thanks for any pointers / suggestions.

Photoshop is a 2D image editing program, and has no provision for 3D rendering or modeling.

I think you’re crediting a photo editing app with CAD properties. Maybe Illustrator will work better…

Illustrator is also a 2d app…I think you should be looking at a 3D modelling app such as Lightwave or 3D Studio Max, or perhaps a CAD program

I was afraid somebody might say Photoshop is not adequate! 3D Studio Max sounds like the one to go for, but the cost of that software is just too steep. Is there a trial/experimental version available for download somewhere?

Thanks for your kind directions…

3D Studio Max is great for what you want to do, but, as you state, is expensive. I have several iterations of a program, which was at one time sold by MetaCreations, 3D Studio Deluxe (named changed as often as the sofware supplier did). I’ll look around and see if it is still available. I know that Corel bought parts of MetaCreations (Painter, and a few more). Since I have these programs at the studio on several workstations, I can’t get the exact data for you until tomorrow, but will see if I can gather it up. IIRC, the entire package(s) were in the US$150 range, but that was THEN. I also seem to recall some freeware/shareware 3D illustrators that were highly praised a few years back. I’ll see if I still have any of those URL’s, if they are still active.

The only cheap program, other than a dedicated 3D modeller where you might be able to do is RealDraw Pro:

It is an excellent piece of software, and I’ve used it for the odd, small, 3D requirement before.

If you have some spare time – povray is _the_ 3D freeware standard. You coulkd make your 2D ‘map’ of the ship’s
interior surfaces with photoshop or Illuistrator then skin them onto the interior of a cylinder.

I second Mike’s suggestion, for a total of two Mikes and counting.

POVray is free, can do just about anything, has loads of documentation, and has a sizeable user community.

The only problem with it as far as I can see is the likely learning curve for the software. However, Mike Squared are probably right 😉

There is a freeware cad project, called "Minos". I don’t know much about it, except that it works, and it’s free.

The learning curve is the bit I need to work around. But there are quite a few choices here, and I might find a few experts in the user community to borrow some support.

Cheers!
