Hi,

Looks like my Matrox G550 is dying; having changed the monitor I’m still getting brightness variations over time, colour drifting slightly every few minutes etc, so I’m looking at getting a new card. I’m just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a PC card to use with Photoshop on Windows. I.e. I’m looking for a good stable "2D" display with good colour rendering.

I’m not the least interested in 3D as I do no modelling, and play no games. I currently run a resolution of 1920×1440, 32Bit and I’m still on 98SE as XP doesn’t seem to like my old Wacom. Monitor is a CRT.

Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m not made of money so the more reasonably priced the better 🙂

Thanks for any replies,

Ian

Any halfway-decent 2D or 3D card will serve you well. You can pick up a Radeon 9200SE for about $40 these days, which will work just fine (and also give you 3D capability if you ever need it later). Matrox still makes 2D cards which will also be quite suitable.

check the card in another machine before tossing
if you are getting fades it could also be power fluctuations check the power supply (blow out fans, make sure it’s not running hot) are you using a good UPS to prevent power surge, is the monitor plugged into it?
I use a Radeon 300 but I am into 3D gaming
I use a CRT monitor

Be sure to try the simple task of cleaning the PCB’s contacts before you replace the card. Easily done with a *pink* pencil eraser.

Thanks,

According to monitoring software my PSU voltages are rock solid.

The picture seems to gradually, subtly change colour; sometimes my whites are a tad pinkish, sometimes a little greenish, and the contrast seems to vary appreciably as well. Having swapped the monitor I’m figuring the graphics card is next in line for appraisal (not too expensive, and the monitor needed replacing anyway 🙂

Thanks to everyone for their answers!
