Assume this has been asked before…but help anyhow. When I open jpegs (off a digital camera), the layer is always locked and I have to copy the layer before I can work with the file. Is there any way I can switch this feature off. I find it VERY irritating!

Thanks
P

There is no way to avoid this.
You can work on a locked layer.
To unlock it Alt-Double click on it in the Layers palette.

you don’t have to "copy" anything to unlock it When double clicked it renames to layer 0 and is no longer locked.

You should not be saving jpgs over jpgs anyway, so when you make changes to the images (even if it’s just renaming the layer) save in a non lossy format like TIFF or psd.

Most of us like to save our "originals" as they came out of the camera. Like negatives we may want them untouched one day.

Make changes to duplicate files

the bottom layer by default is the "background" it is locked so you don’t mess it up unintentionally. Many of us leave it locked and work on a duplicate layer for changes and having a locked background means you can erase back or refer back to the original.

why bother repeating good advise? and i DO have over 10 years working in the industry.

Simple answer to the OP question. is to change the default backround layer to anything but background. and if one is worried about lossyness…save as a tiff as to keep integrity.

hmmm….at least i am not so trite as to post crappy insults. I was just trying to let the OP know that kat gave good advise..and the answer was there. so kiss my jerzy butt 🙂

So I’m very sorry, I thought you’ve meant it ironically.

A JPEG file never has layers. The JPEG file format does not permit layers.

You do not need to copy the layer in order to work with it in layers, however, All you need to do is double-click on the word "background" in the Layers palette.
