What causes some PSD thumbnails to be formed black?
What can I do to eliminate this effect?

Thanks,

windows or Mac?

If windows:
Adobe are no longer putting thumbnails creation for psd files into the Windows explorer, they say there is a compatibility problem. . you can only see them in the built in browser in PS
someone told me to use a certain file from an old version (like 7) I did it and now I have thumbnails from PSD files back in windows, it is not recommended but I’ve had no problems.
others are using 3rd party software Like Thumbsplus to get around it

it started with version CS I don’t have CS2 yet

I am using CS2 on a Windows XP SP2 machine.
You are right, Adobe Bridge displays all thumbnail images just fine. Windows Explorer displays some thumbnails properly and many black. I’d like to know what file to use to make this work again. The previous version of Photoshop that I was using was version (don’t laugh) 6. Thanks.

It’s because Adobe removed psicon.dll from PS. Why? Because it never worked properly and was the source of a number of problems.

many of us never HAD the problem so it sucks that they removed it instead of fixing it.
I am using it now for a few months with no problems
You’ve been quite lucky Kat. For a while, it was the number one source of complaints to Adobe.

NB. If you get any operating system problems involving graphics, suspect psicon.dll first 🙂

I think it is fair to say that anyone having this problem is unlikely to use the patch. I also have never had said problems, and in fact in most threads I’ve read about this few if any have. There is still some mystery as to what the cause of the problem even was, given it has been blamed on the operating system, yet the thumbnails features was removed from all CS CS2 irrespective of OS. WinXP with the patch working great here.

I downloaded the dll from the link you mentioned months ago, and find it very useful indeed!
The only problem I have, is when I inadvertantly forget its a .psd thumbnail I’m looking at, click on it to see a larger version in Windows viewer and have to wait 3 minutes for Photoshop to open!!!!

LOL been there done that (like 1000 times!)

I have win xp pro sp2 on a Dell 8400 (3.0, 1GB RAM, Radeon x300)

removed all Dell software upon purchase and installed win xp pro sp 2 before installing anything else, they put a LOT of crap onto it when you get it, trialwares, ISP offers, music players, etc. I prefer to know what is installed, that I put it there, and if it messes up then I know what and who did it)
