Hi Everyone,

In March of this year I created http://www.marsartgallery.com to support the presentations I give about the planet Mars. Anyway, it has grown beyond that.

I would like to hear your comments on the web site and the pictures that I have on display there. All of them were created by first converting PDS image data from various Mars robotic missions into either raw or bmp files. I then used Photoshop to do all the cleaning, compositing, etc to produce the final image.

Please direct your replies to the group as this email address is a fake to foil spammers. If you do want to email me directly, the address is on the web site where I use a javascript to encode it.

Thanks in advance.

Best Regards, Jim

I like the images but… 😉

…my problem with images such as this, n0o matter who produces them is that I want to see Mars as I would see it if I was on the surface. A lot of images don’t let me do this. It’s not just you, even NASA produces a lot of false colour images. I just find it frustrating I guess. 🙂

Nice artwork though and the abstracts were interesting.

That will limit you to images from the two Viking landers of the 70’s, the Mars Pathfinder mission, and the two Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit and Opportunity. The image return from MER is the best and represents the bulk of the surface images. I do have one MER on the site in the Surface Gallery section.

With respect to images of Mars, there is no choice but to produce false color images because that is the data you have to work with. MER gives the best false color to date because of its filter set. Note that filters are chosen for their scientific value and not their ability to construct true color approximations. Scientists are most interested in understanding mineralogy so filters appropriate to that task are chosen.

Understand. I think it’s just because I see a photograph and want to feel I’m looking at the scene as it really easy rather.

Well you’ve got a wait in store. The latest mission to Mars was launched a couple weeks ago – the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. It will arrive at Mars next March. So once again you will be treated to scenes from Martian orbit rather than the surface. There are a couple of Mars landers in the works – Mars Scout launching in 2007 and Mars Science Laboratory in 2009. Hope you’re the patient sort.

LOL! Well, I’m hoping to see those Alpha Centauri Prime pictures before I die 😉
