Can anyone tell me how to "shrink a layer by 5 pixels whilst keeping the other layers the original size"? It’s got me beat. Also does anyone know a website that might give me some ideas with type,
i.e. some different effects that can be done in photoshop?

Copy that layer to a new image, resize that image, then copy back?

No. Use Transform.

Click on the layer
Edit–>transform–>scale
Right mouse click on the width and height boxes in the toolbar to select pixels as the unit of measurment
Type in five less pixels for W and H and hit enter
