I had a picture and I needed to create an outline of a moderately simple (but not trivial) shape with straight edges. I created a new layer and then start looking for a"Line Tool" in CS2 like the one I used to use in 5.5. I found something that seemed to call itself a pen-tool which the on-line help said I was supposed to use but when I started drawing lines with it, it wasn’t just drawing lines but creating some sort of area (maybe a mask, I don’t know).

I just wanted to draw straight, black lines. Finally I gave up and opened the image in 5.5 and finished the job in a few minutes. But I’d really like to be able to do this in the new program so I can uninstall the old one. Is there a way to draw lines in CS2?

There is a Line Tool in CS2. It’s "under" the Shapes. It can be used as a Shape, a Path or a pixel line tool just as in 5.5.

By the way, you could have used the Pen. You need to set it to a Path in the Options Bar instead of a Shape, then stroke it.

Maybe a book or brief course in the basics is in order.

Well, I just ordered a book that wasn’t in when I posted the question, but I knew exactly how to do what I wanted to do in 5.5 — as well as a lot of other things there as well.

NOrm…its a very common problem. WHen you select the pen tool…look at the top right tool bar…next to the pen tool there are two options.."shape layers" or "paths" select paths…and then you have a handy tracing tool. DUnno why PS defaults to shape layers ….have never used it in my many years using PS.

heh…and after all these years i ALWAYS forget that the caps lock key changes the brush!! lol

Norm,

You have hit upon a reason that I will often keep a previous ver of PS on at least one box – ’cause I know the interface and can get the things that I need done with my eyes tied behind my back (or something similar <G>). When the client calls and needs it "yesterday," I just grab ver current -1, and go at it. While working without deadlines, I always try to use the latest ver, so I can become proficient with its interface.

Hope that both edjh’s and jrzyguy’s explanations helped. I still find that the "shape" Option in the Pen Tool gets turned on, all too frequently. Three clicks, and the dang thing fills in. Obviously, now I know what is going on, but lament the time wasted with those three clicks, and then a quick click on the right Option.
