I have received a JPG picture where the background has been removed. When I look at the file the background is still there. I am then told that I should use
something called mask to be able to have an isolated image. Can anyone tell me how to do that?

Thanks

Select the background, inverse the selection, click the Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the palette. But if you save as jpeg the mask will go away and the file will be flattened because jpeg doesn’t support any kind of transparency.

I would ask whoever sent you the file for the unflattened psd file with the background removed.
