I am a bit confused about whether I should do basic adjusting of my raw files in Elements (when the picture first comes up with the camera raw sliders), or just ignore that and go straight to the main editing screen. And if I do fiddle with adjustments before going to the main editing screen, does it matter if I do them in 16 bit as opposed to 8 bit?
One source (Complete Digital Photography by Ben Long) suggests that because you are dealing with the raw photo information, there is little or no degradation from the adjustments that will be done at that first stage.
I do get the feeling, though, that the Sharpening, Luminance Smoothing and Color Noise Reduction slides should all be pushed to the left if doing major editing in the main editing mode.
So, what is the best approach when opening a new photo for the first time? Ken
