No. I think that it’s a crime of a very serious nature, but you don’t deserve to die for it.

Sure you do. If you have a chance of dying, I’m sure you would be way less likely to do it.

You have a chance of dying at a lot of things. Like driving on the freeway. You don’t deserve to die for it though. Besides, you could apply "If you have a chance of dying, I’m sure you would be way less likely to do it. " to anything and make its occurrence a lot less likely but if we said, let’s shoot anyone who skips school for example, it might make fewer skip school but it still wouldn’t make those who did deserving of death.

Given the conditions in New Orleans etc looting for drink & food is wholly justified – if I was in charge at the superdome I would have organised groups to go out and bring back whatever they can find!

Asking this question is an insult to the people dying in the stricken areas and displays an arrogance and lack of compassion that is becoming so typical of "modern" USA.

But at least Bush is doing something to keep the petrol prices down.

I would have no objection to finding fod and freshwater… However, all them folks walking down the street with plasma screen TV’s and 10 pairs of pants should get a rubber bullet in the ass.

Oh, wait… the NOPD is participating in the looting themselves! Whoops!

Lack of compassion? Various states are sending their own National Guard units down to MISS. and LA. Literally hundreds of donation campaigns have popped up all over the nation. In my own city, one group of radio stations raised over $1 million in just two days.

But at least Bush is doing something to keep the petrol prices down.

No doubt a lot of Americans will now jump in and defend their proud nation – sorry, wake up and smell the roses! The Americans have achieved a lot and no doubt will achieve more in the future – but in case you didn’t notice the fruits of their labour are enjoyed by less and less people. Or did you miss how Bush & his cronies squandered the surplus (that was supposed to pay back the US debt) on tax cuts for the rich? Did you miss how the first response to the catastrophe was to protect property (eg shoot looters) rather than saving lives? That the big relief news was that the national oil reserves were opened up to stabilise the price of oil? How choreographed Bush’s visit in Biloxi was? It’s a pity you don’t watch foreign news, but foreign correspondents (e.g. the British and German reports I’ve seen) expressed their disgust at what was done (e.g. rescue teams were "searching" behind Bush where no bodies were but in view of the cameras, and when the cameras were done they left!!! Bush couldn’t even be bothered to actually go where the search was!!!) The inequality between rich and poor is not just wider than at any time in history in any country, but is getting bigger at an increasing rate! The number / percentage of poor in the US is increasing, and naked greed and exploitation is barely hidden under the pretence of freedom.

And if you think that is an isolated event – just look at Iraq. Let’s be candid about one thing – I was for the Iraq war. Because Saddam (who was originally brought to power with the support of the US) committed virtual genocide in the north and south of the country. But the incredible incompetence of what happened next (not to forget the corruption that allowed Bush’s cronies to fill their pockets) and which cost over 100,000 people their lives is only equalled by the incompetence shown in Louisiana (where now over 10,000 people are expected to have died).

So forgive me if I don’t think your arrogance is any longer justified. A lot of things have been going increasingly wrong in the US, and if you don’t wake up soon then you’ll find that "Freedom without responsibility is just anarchy".

No strings attached, no prosecution. Could or would you do it?

Looting for survival is not much different than self defense. "If I don’t steal something for my kids to eat and drink, they will die."
I have no problem with that sort of looting.

I saw a photo of someone at the Superdome scrapping out a dirty diaper to re-use. If that Mom has to steal a box of diapers, more power to her.

Looting for "profit" is totally different.
"I want that thing. I’m gonna steal it."
I have a problem with that.

I live in Gulf Breeze Florida.
My house was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan. I had four feet of filthy salt water in the house for three days. My front door and windows were blown to bits by the water surge. I was smart and "wealthy" enough (meaning I own a car) to evacuate to Memphis for a few days.

I had brought plenty of water and food, bought in Montgomery, Al. back with me. Within a few more days, FEMA and others had brought pallets of MRE’s, water and ice. There were dozens of Port-o-Potties brought in and placed in parking lots upand down Route 98, themain road here.

I never had to suffer, (except the insurance woes still going on a year later) but I’ve seen my entire neighborhood wrecked. I’ve seen the despair. I can understand the concept of self preservations by those who are shocked by the desecration and will do what they have to to survive.

OTOH, if a person entered my house to steal my stereo, I’d blow his fuckin’ brains out.

Actually you do. You’re taking advantage of someone else’s misfortune to line your own "pockets", and that sort of selfish scum the planet can do without. The only exceptions of course are the need for necessities like food, water, medical emergencies, etc.

Seems the world is full of back seat drivers who, in there dreams, think would have done better. It is easy to sit back and criticize but really it does nothing to help. Unless of course it helps to inflate your own ego.

In reality, none of you have any real idea of the reality of the logistic nightmare. If any of you really think those in charge where just sitting back and not trying to do anything then you are really nieve, or perhaps just enjoy listening to the sound of your own gums flapping.

If you are really serious, then get off your ass and do something!

I start paper work and training tomorrow with the Red Cross. I hope to be on the Gulf coast within three weeks.

You can be part of the solution or, You can listen to the sound of your own gums flapping….

Good for you.

Not on a bet. Though it’s now clear why you don’t have

Don’t insult my service!

I have nothing but good things to say about people who are "Doing Something". It’s those that sit back in there easy chairs and second guess those that are there on the ground or in the air that piss me off. Or those that criticize the entire operation when they have absolutely no experience in this type of operation and have zero knowledge of the logistics involved. I find it irritating when people of different political beliefs use a tragedy like this to ridicule those that are currently in charge. The fact is, they are not in the loop and have no idea of what the real problem is/was. There will be a time to go over everything and find out what went wrong what went right and who screwed up. Now is not that time.

I’ve met
very few rangers who thought anyone else was doing anything worthwhile that wasn’t related to killing people or blowing up things.

Another insult..

Pure bullshit! You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Most all soldiers who have been in combat would choose to do anything else besides kill and destroy. But we’ll put our own ass on line any day we are called to do so. The fact that you would make such a comment clarifies that you really have no idea what it means to be a soldier. Many Rangers have given there life in the act of trying to save the lives of others. Your insulting comment to there sacrifice is an insult not only to their families who also gave the greatest sacrifice but to humanity as a whole!

Me, personally, would rather volunteer my time to clean crap out of the streets or stand in a food service line, or haul trash, or do laundry, or haul water, or serve in whatever capacity is needed, than listen to anymore meaningless drivel…

You sir, see the world through a drinking straw, in other words you have a very narrow view of reality. A very dangerous view indeed, easy to be blindsided…

Ordinarily, I’d be sympathetic to your problem. The burden of the last few years has fallen disproportionately on the military, particularly the ground pounders.

Our military doesn’t need your sympathy. Most are proud to serve.

Unfortunately, you’ve used up the
goodwill by assuming that everyone who isn’t you is worthless.

Narrow view of reality. I came home from Baghdad a year ago. I would say 90 percent of the people there are glad to have us. Last week a buddy of mine was home on leave and said that the relations with the locals are even better than when I left. You see, they do want to be free and they are willing to fight for it. It is only a matter of time. But, I am sure you get your information from the media who has the unique ability of only reporting when something gets blown up. It’s the source of that drinking straw I keep referring to..

But you just go ahead and keep up with your insults and your whining and bitching, see where that gets ya…

No. I think that it’s a crime of a very serious nature, but you don’t deserve to die for it.

Actually you do. You’re taking advantage of someone else’s misfortune to line your own "pockets", and that sort of selfish scum the planet can do without. The only exceptions of course are the need for necessities like food, water, medical emergencies, etc.

So what gives YOU the right to decide that someone is looting & that they should die? I’m Australian & don’t care what Americans do to each other, but
there’s a whole lot of scum on this rock who we all could do without. What
gives you the right to decide who they are?

Looting is stealing – it’s almost always obvious, especially when some greedy scum is pushing a shopping trolley full of DVD players out of an electronics store window and there’s no shop staff around for miles. :-\

And I’m not American anyway.
Pick a better scenario. Lynch the person pushing the trolley for looting & find out later that he/she was the shop keeper trying to save as much stock as he/she could.
I didn’t say that you were American. I don’t insult people in that manner.

Criticising what is wrong is not being un-American – it is what being American is all about: to make right.

Here are a few facts:

Americans came to the New World to escape oppression and virtual slavery, to escape the inequality that blighted the English society. Consequently the pursuit of happiness was one of the cornerstones of the new constitution.

BUT

The inequalities in the US between the rich and the poor are worse than they EVER were or are in Britain (or anywhere in Europe)

The inequalities have not shrunk under the Bush government but are increasing in leaps and bounds. This is not due to the poor being lazy but due to the tax breaks benefiting the rich and being paid for by the poor and middle-income earners (look at the statistics to see how many former middle-class members have joined the ranks of the poor, who can no longer afford health care, or retirement!)

Corruption and Cronyism are rife in the US – just look at the contracts for Iraq!

The Supreme Court – THE GUARDIAN OF THE CONSTITUTION ! – has now openly come out on the side of the rich and greedy against what is right: see "Kelo vs New London". The fifth amendment allows the state to seize private property only for "public use" (like building roads). However a private developer in New London (Connecticut) wanted to raze some perfectly nice waterfront homes to built an office block and some posh apartments. The owners didn’t want to sell. The City forced them to (calculating that the development would create jobs and yield more taxes) …

AND THE SUPREME COURT TOOK THE CITY’S SIDE!!!!!

And all the while the leaders lie with a straight face when asked to take responsibility for anything, e.g.

Defending the U.S. government’s response to Hurricane Katrina, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff argued Saturday that government planners did not predict such a disaster ever could occur.

But in fact, government officials, scientists and journalists have warned of such a scenario for years.

or

Every official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be fired, Director Michael Brown especially.
In a nationally televised interview Thursday night, he said his agency hadn’t known until that day that thousands of storm victims were stranded at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. He gave another nationally televised interview the next morning and said, "We’ve provided food to the people at the Convention Center so that they’ve gotten at least one, if not two meals, every single day."

Lies don’t get more bald-faced than that, Mr. President.
Yet, when you met with Mr. Brown Friday morning, you told him, "You’re doing a heck of a job."

Where are you from that life is so bad? You make it sound like America is on the verge of a civil war of classes. Bullshit again. Everybody I know has a job and seem to have enough money to spend money on things they really do not need.

You look at the rich and feel jealous, who cares? I have what I need and I do not need to be rich to be happy nor do I need money to pursue happiness. What does the pursuit of happiness have to do with money?

But in fact, government officials, scientists and journalists have warned of

Agreed, It has been a know fact for years that the levies where not good enough. In fact any civil engineer would tell you that a coastal city built below sea level is a bad idea.

But that is not what he said, He said they where surprised by the levee breaking after the storm had left the area, (paraphrase). You are putting words in someone’s mouth. that make you as big of a liar as you proclaim him to be. If you are going to quote someone, get_it_right!

If you are trying to proclaim that those in charge didn’t give a shit or care about saving lives then I must charge you again of being full of demagoguery bullshit. Sure, they got there asses kicked, no one can argue that, but paint the picture with truth. This is a disaster of proportion never before seen in this country. resulting in utter chaos. Poor communications, poor logistics, not to mention six to eight feet of water blocking most roadways. No common point of command and control, nobody knowing what the other guy is doing. The definition of chaos. Yet though all of this AMERICANS where out there saving lives, where is the praise for them? You only point out what went bas as if nothing went right. You are trying to capitalize on tragedy. That makes me sick. How about a round of applause for those AMERICANS who where out saving lives…

Depends of if the looter was Flipper Mike or not.

You don’t shoot them instantly you spot them – besides, the owner or anyone else not doing anything illegal would be able to prove it, while looter scum would simply run.

If they were breaking and entering into my home, YES. Otherwise, NO. In fact, I read that some stores just opened the doors and told the ‘looters’ to help themselves. Given the situation, that is what I would have done.

Nope. That simply encourages greedy scum who grab as much as they can to stockpile stuff they don’t need and then sell it at super-inflated prices to others who do need it. A better approach is to give it away with some semblance of order rather than just a free-for-all.

On the other side of the coin, a shop owner giving away his stock won’t get their money back (apart from perhaps the very rare grateful person who comes back after it’s all over to thank him). The insurance company is extremely unlikely to pay out to some giving away stock, whereas if it was left sitting to rot they would. Insurance companies tend to be scum of the biggest kind who’ll use any excuse to escape having to pay out. Even here in New Zealand, thousands of miles away, the greedy scum are putting their premiums prices up because of the New Orleans’ storm problems. X-(

Given the conditions in New Orleans etc looting for drink & food is wholly
justified – if I was in charge at the superdome I would have organised groups to go out and bring back whatever they can find! (/quote)

Thats what i thought too! if you have no food and clean water, i’d organize people to get stuff back too!
I am deeply angered by Bush not responding for four days (responding by helping i mean)

And back to the SURVEY

No. You don’t kill people especially not for things like that.

How about for stealing TVs?

Or shooting at people and aircraft?

LOL, yeh CNN has never embellished a story or taken words out of context… I saw the interview. They where surprised that the levee broke, as to say they thought they had may it through the worst of the storm and then, surprise!, the levee broke… But you and others want to take it out of context as to say they never thought it was possible the levee could break. When you turn on a light on the bulb flashes and burns out it is a surprise, that is not to say that you didn’t know that light bulbs burn out. Can I make it any more simple for you to understand?

Well, I didn’t start the cross-posting – I started posting in stargate and there was a point to it all (e.g. that people "worry" about a Goauld or Ori takeover and enslavement when we are doing a pretty good job ourselves).

That’s not all I did, there you go again with the half truths. I first had to explain to you how I, and everybody else with any sense could see through the political manipulation of the word, "surprise" when speaking of the levee system failing in New Orleans.

Anybody can pluck numbers for the internet..

Here, In the US we are setting all time records for the number of homeowners.

http://ahghomebuyernews.com/consumer-news.php3?IssueID=3

Should I go pluck some numbers regarding US immigration? Seems allot of people want to come live in this hell hole…

How about unemployment? All but about 4% of the people in The United States have a job. You see it helps them pay for those houses they are buying. This is not to mention the number of aliens who live here who are not counted in those unemployment numbers, but most of them have a job too.. I wonder why they want to come work in this hell hole…

So anyway, like I said, peddle on! We like it here.

That’s the thing, isn’t it? If you’re defending someone (or yourself) or the property of someone you know, that’s going to be more reason to hurt someone than if you’re watching people take stuff out of a Best Buy. BTW, I use Best Buy as an example, not because I think they deserve to be looted.

looting is a douchebag thing to do, but its not an offense punishible by the death penalty in any state.

Actually you do. You’re taking advantage of someone else’s misfortune to line your own "pockets", and that sort of selfish scum the planet can do without. The only exceptions of course are the need for necessities like food, water, medical emergencies, etc.

I disagree.

In situations such as New Orleans, or the riots ten years ago (and forty years ago) in Los Angeles, the people doing the looting are definitely opportunists.

There is not a "dire state of the times," The people doing the looting most certainly have a criminal mind, and are just taking advantage of the situation to "justify" their behavior.

How can you say such things with such casualness?
killing isn’t funny, its a sign of the dire state of the times when casual remarks about killing people are thrown like that.

I disagree.

In situations such as New Orleans, or the riots ten years ago (and forty years ago) in Los Angeles, the people doing the looting are definitely opportunists.

There is not a "dire state of the times," The people doing the looting most
certainly have a criminal mind, and are just taking advantage of the situation to "justify" their behavior.

So those people who hadn’t had food or water for five plus days were just criminals when they broke into the stores to get food and water for their dying children

the looting I saw happened within 24 hours of the storm hit, not four or five days later.

Then open your eyes more often. The opinions of the uninformed are worthless.

lookit the crossposting, the sure sign of trolls at work.

So what?

I have to agree with howldog… The looting I witnessed was not people stealing groceries, it was people stealing THINGS! I didn’t see a single example of people taking food for them and their children. I saw dozens of people running with stereos and TVs and racks of clothing and other STUFF, nothing that would be of any value in a disaster/survival situation. Looters should be dealt with using the same seriousness and severity as any other TRAITOROUS SCUM, and as far as I’m concerned, anyone who would use the cover of a disaster to rob their neighbors is just that, A TRAITOR! Traitors need to be shot.

Clothing has no value in a disaster situation? How many have you survived?

I’m not only speaking of TV. I’m also referencing private footage on the net and the resources of countless newspaper journalists that are in the area. Same people you are. The imbecilic gesture would be believing only one source without crossreferencing others

Clothing has no value in a disaster situation?

Who needs racks of formal wear in a flood zone in 90 degree weather. Are you kidding me?

How many have you survived?

Well, lets see…

Natural Disasters;
3 Hurricanes, a two and a half week black-out in alaska in february caused by 21 simultaneous avalanches, and a 9.7 earthquake.

Man Made

2 House fires, a multiple automobile pileup, and a sinking fishing boat.

How about you.

Looters should be dealt with using the same seriousness and severity as any

Do you even know what the word ‘traitor’ means?

as per Noah Webster; (PLEASE NOTE ENTRY 1)
trai-tor Etymology: Middle English traitre, from Old French, from Latin traditor, from tradere to hand over, deliver, betray, from trans-, tra- trans- + dare to give

1 : one who betrays another’s trust or is false to an obligation or duty 2 : one who commits treason

I think that robbing your neighbor during a disater situation would certainly count as betraying a trust.

(PS What’s with the name calling. This is supposed to be a discussion forrum where opinions are posted. This thread is off topic but it was certainly an interesting one worth posting to. If you can’t respond to an opinion without name calling then I think your problems may lie slightly deeper than offense at my humble opinions. I’m not interested in changing anyones mind, my intention was to provide my opinion as food for thought.)

Also please note that in the UCMJ (that’s the Uniform Code of Millitary Justice) Looting during a time of Martial Law IS an act of treason. By definition one who commits an act of treason is a traitor.

so there!

(an all that said without name calling, you jack-ass)

I dont know about that, that seems a little severe, doesnt it?

Vovoid is a moron, i dont know why he/she/it continues to troll the photoshop group, i wonder if this person even owns a copy of photoshop.

about the looting on tv, vovoid continues to assert that the looting occured what, 4 or 5 days after the intial flood, and people stole plasma tvs because they were abandoned and angry.

So I suppose that means, the looting i saw on tv 24 hours after the city was flooded, was not from new orleans, but stock footage from some OTHER looting in some other flooded city, and the racist media only showed that to make people hate each other.

but i need to open my eyes more often. LOL

vovoid, you suck.

Please, before you go impugning someone else’s intelligence you might try at least capitalize proper nouns. Oh, yeah, if you can’t spell Voivod (it’s only six letters after all but it is polysyllabic, maybe that’s your problem. Do I need to dumb down my posts to your level, using only monosyllabic words?) you can cut and paste it since it does appear at the top of the post.
