printing woe

when i print out of photoshop 7,my pictures come out too light and have a wispy quality.
i can cure it by using>adjustments>variations and selecting an image two clicks darker than the original,and
although this looks too dark on my monitor,it prints out ok.i’ve looked at various settings but can’t see anything that could be causing the initially light prints.
This problem doesn’t occur in PSP 8
i have an epson stylus photo 870 printer and use XP

Yes.

But you have not set up Colour Management, and Photoshop uses CM. So it will be using a Default setting which will not suit your Monitor or Printer. Properly setup and operated Col Management will give WYSIWYG for Prints.
