Sorry to ask, as this seems to be a touchy issue, but from what I’m reading it looks as if pirated copies of CS slightly cripple themselves… is this true?

If so, it’s about time the big software companies learned this trick. I used to work for a company that produced an expensive vertical solution app that used a hardlock for feature and license control. In early versions, any mucking with the code would simply make it not work. In later editions, the hardlock "wrapper" was engineered so that if the code was hacked, the system would work.. but would, for instance, spontaneously reboot on the hour. People actually called tech support for help with these problems… 🙂

Apparently the very first crack posted on Usenet had this problem, and was corrected shortly thereafter (within a few days).

doesn’t matter – the initial crack was rushed, then, a perfect working one was released. there is no way to protect software, period. hardware locks, hashes, serials, activation, etc. can and have and will be always
be bypassed.
pick an app, any app, there is a crack or something for it.

[snip interesting article]

Actually, the problem comes from a hack that was not done right. It wasn’t engineered that way by Adobe. Some say that the perfect hack has been done and is out there. Dunno for sure.

Outlyers and thieves seem to identify themselves when they run out of competence. Like you did, I also worked at a software company with a product of up to a million dollars a license. The earlier years’ versions (less expensive) were pirated thanks to some stolen sourcecode but the pirates identified themselves within no time. It seems those so desperate to steal big software were also stupid enough to not understand how hard it was to understand and keep it updated to work with new versions of the OS that were mandated by the hardware manufacturers. And they were dimwitted enough not to realize that big packages are well known, so they go to a consultant – who in turn, reported them to us for a healthy, ah, ‘referral’ fee.

each time a new security feature or anti-krack thing comes out, chances are that a smart hacker will find a way to circonvent it. It’s like a law; there’s always a loophole and somebody finds it. There’s no such thing as a 100% safe or uncrackabke system or software.
