I have been receiving JPEG files from an Asian source. To my surprise these JPEG have embedded clipping-paths.

Can someone tell how this is possible; I’ve been unable to duplicate this using Photoshop.

Thanks,
Jim

Same methodology as with eps, though why you’d want to mangle your graphics I have no idea.

Jerry, I don’t understand how adding a clipping path to a graphic "mangles" it.

But more to the point, I am at a loss to explain how a JPG file could contain a clipping path. As far as I know, it can’t.

Jim, can you post a link to one of these files so we can take a look at it?

The JPEG format doesn’t support the inclusion of a functional "clipping" path, but an image in which paths were saved will retain those paths when saved as JPEG.

Jerry, Dennis & John,

Thanks for your addressing the issue.

Jerry,
I must agree with Dennis, I don’t considering as ‘mangling’ the image. In my case, it’s extremely handy when preparing files for ‘web’; especially in a sharing enviornment. Instead of logging around extremely large TIFs, EPS or PSD files you can optimise the files (making them web ready). Then without discarding any information simply save the file in a JPG format with the embedded paths.

John,
Thanks for the clarification, I tried revising the process and it worked—just as you explained.

Regards,
Jim
