Here’s an interesting little routine I figured out in PS CS, most likely a bug, which results in an ever darkening GIF file image. Here’s how you do it:

1. Create a new Greyscale image. Draw some stuff in there, use different tones of grey as you wish.

2. Save this as a GIF file.

3. Close the file, and reopen it.

4. Check the colour mode – PS thinks it’s a standard palletised image rather than a greyscale one. Convert the image to greyscale again.

5. Resave the image, close and reload it. It has now magically darkened for no reason whatsoever.

Hooray. I love the Adobe CS apps. A new bug each day! 😉

Addendum: It would seem that ANY greyscale GIF is automatically receiving a darkening. Also, my colour profile setup is set to not do anything fancy to Grey or RGB images (only CMYK). I might try switching colour management entirely off and see if that makes any difference. At the moment, it does appear to be something misbehaving though, as only greyscale GIF files seem to be affected.

"PS thinks it’s a standard palletised image rather than a greyscale one."

Just wanted to point out that the reason PS thinks it is one, is because it IS one, as soon as you save it out as a .gif. All gifs are "palletised". They are not true greyscale.

It’s true that Color Management is to blame for this, but be aware that anytime you are resaving compressed images, that is not very good practice. This is especially true with .jpg’s, but apparently, this is also true with .gifs.

What happens if you convert your image mode to Indexed Color before saving [as this is intrinsically happening when you save as a GIF]?

Also, Save for Web gives you more control over the conversion to GIF.

Set your View>Proof Colours to Monitor RGB and you will find it has magically lightened to the same shade…
