I’ve installed this on two different PC’s, and this thing consistently crashes to the desktop. I would consider myself fairly proficient in computers – I build my own PC’s and am familiar with troubleshooting software. I have all the latest drivers and updates. I have a Nikon D70 that I’m trying to use with the latest Adobe Camera Raw plug-in which supports this camera, and is properly installed.

Computer 1 (custom built)
WinXP
2.6ghz
1gb RAM (50% allocated to Photoshop)
100gb hard drive – 66gb free
Scratch disk is set to a second hard drive.

This computer also has Nikon Capture software installed, and Photoshop 7. BTW, Photoshop 7 never crashes.

Computer 2
Dell with WinXP
2.8ghz
512mb RAM (50% allocated to Photoshop)
100gb hard drive, 20gb free

This computer does NOT have Nikon Capture installed, but also has a trial version of Photoshop Elements on it.

On computer 1, CS will crash after working with a RAW file for awhile. The file browser will also cause CS to crash to desktop when randomly clicking on a folder filled with small resolution .jpegs.

Computer 2 is worse. I cannot even browse a single folder in the file browswer without CS crashing to desktop. I can’t even open a file via file>open without CS crashing to desktop.

What is the problem here? Two completely different PC’s cannot run CS wihtout it crashing to desktop constantly. I understand if there was a problem with one of them, but both? This isn’t convincing me to upgrade to CS, and I might just have to stick with V7 and the Nikon software. But I’d really like to upgrade.

Is this common with trial software? Advice? Thanks.

what’s common on the 2 systems? brand of video card? antivirus or firewall progs? try to narrow it down that way first. it sounds like a driver conflict. update the vid drivers to start with…

is it common? no. not that we’ve heard. it’s something local to your systems. as i said, look to see what’s common to both your boxes and check those things first.

Thanks. BTW, I tried going back to the original raw plug in and it still crashes.

Computer 1 has an Nvidia Geforce 4 ti4600 card w/128mb.
Computer 2 has an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro card w/128mb

I’ll check to make sure those drivers are updated.

About the only thing I can think of that’s common on both computers is Norton Internet Security Suite 2004. Firewall and Antivirus. Same version on both computers. Otherwise, no other common hardware or software I can think of. I’ll try disabling those as well to see what’s up. But if that’s the problem, I don’t know what to do because I need both.

Norton ISS… use zonealarm. I bought and discarded NISS. Hated it. Sorry I wasted my money! NAV… I have 2002 updated subscription yearly. No problems. BUT I’ve heard that the 2004 has the same (macrovision) activation scheme as PS CS. (not that it should be an issue with the trial ver) and some have had problems getting them to work and play well together.
good luck.

Well, I think I solved it!

I upgraded the latest ATI drivers on computer 2. But that didn’t fix the problem. I tried disabling the firewall and antivirus, but that didn’t fix the problem.

Then, I remember there was one other common program on the two computers. It’s called Windows Expose. And it’s display software that emulates Expose in the latest Mac OS, Panther. When you move the cursor to a certain point, or hit a certain key, all open windows shrink to fit within the display. You can then click on a window to bring it to the front again. And it’s all animated. It’s written by a small time company, so who knows how stable it really is.

It’s on both computers and runs in the system tray. I exited the program, kept firewall and antivirus on, and lo and behold, CS doesn’t crash anymore when using file browser. I can click any folders, open files, no crashing. The only thing not happening is thumbnails of my D70 RAW files showing up. I put the latest ACR plug in back in, so I’ll continue to look in to that. I’m not at computer 1 but will give that a try as well and see if it resolves the problem there.

Progress! Thanks for the help!
