Photoshop 7.0 using way too much memory

I have an IBM T22 laptop with a 900MHz P3, 256Mb RAM, 20Gb HD, and an S3 Savage (no true 3d support) generic video card. I am running Win2000 Pro (waiting for a more stable, reliable Windows build other than XP) I have run Photoshop 7 very successfully for several months on this machine, although lately, it has been using an obscene amount of memory as of the last few days. I.e. typical system memory used WAS 40,000 >70,000 Kb, NOW is 60,000 > 150,000 Kb. I have also noticed that many of my tools ceased to function due to "insufficient memory". These tools were, respectively, filter > artistic > ALL, filter > brush strokes > ALL, filter > distort > diffuse glow/glass/ocean ripple, filter > render > 3d transform/lens flare/ lighting effects, filter > sketch > ALL, filter > stylize > glowing edges, filter > texture > ALL, filter > video > ALL. In addition to these incapacitated tools, I have also noticed that I can no longer successfully save JPEG files. After I save a file to a JPEG, no other windows program, except for Photoshop 7, can read it.

My graphics designing has been brought to a screeching halt by these issues, so any suggestions, tips or advice would be of great help to me.

Thanks,
Andy

Have you done a reset prefs [per FAQ]?
That would be a good start.

How big are your image files? 256Mb of memory is a bit tight, but should be OK for "normal" stuff.

BTW, have you got plenty of free, unfragemnted disk space? That’s important too.

Read the existing topics, and reduce the percentage of memory you are allocating to Photoshop.
